Everything I know in life, I learned from watching the Fall Guy.
He also trained for real combat that could lead to death. If I knew a 13 who was even ready to understand that type of training, much less participate in it, then I would respect them totally and treat them as an equal to any other black sash I know. However, I have never met any kid in a kwoon who can understand real combat and its consequinces. I believe that to be a very good thing and says something about our society as a whole. Unfortunataly there are kids in certain neiborhoods that do understand death all to well, but do not understand the training involved in fighting for one's life.
You make a very good point. I have said it before, and it is how I teach my students: "Is your training 'real'?" If you're not making it real in you rmind, then you are only hurting yourself. The stark reality is that in todays day and age, most people will not need to defend themselves in a physical altercation. But....it's better to be prepared and have it and never need it, than to not be prepared and really need it.
Ok, I am beginning to get a bit of a different view....I have been doing a little reading on one specific martial arts master. Why do I call him a "master"? Because in all of his battles, he was never defeated. EVER. This person was none other than Miamoto Musashi. The greatest swordsman of his time. Now, this is a man who at the ripe old age of just 13, whooped his first adult male in a sword duel. In fact, he didn't even use a sword to beat him. He used a piece of wood, while the "expert" swordsman had a sword. Beat him and killed him. He did it again at 16. I'm not changing my rules OR my views that no person can have a blackbelt before 12, but man....That really drives it home. Something of further note, he was self taught so to speak. He also was similar to Bruce Lee, and thought of "no way as way". He did not profess any specific system, but rather no system. Very interesting.
So when a child in Zimbabwe is taught to kill with a machete that's tragic and horrfiying, but when it's a Japanese guy with a sword it's cool?

No, your words were that he *edit*(Miyamoto Musashi)*end edit* is someone you have no problem calling *edit* a martial arts *end edit* Master.
I had to fix it for you to keep things in context. I would have no problems with calling Miyamoto Musashi a martial arts master. I don't think anyone else here would either. You have a nasty habit of taking what a person says and trying to twist it to say what you want it to. You take their words out of context, and omit key words of their quotes.

LOL! No I don't actually, I was pointing out that you were praising the actions of a 13 year old boy for killing someone.
Are you now saying that you weren't?

Actually, I was praising the training, and the conviction of this young 13 y/o boy. This "boy" was out of line in what he did though. The way it happened, was this samurai posted up a sign trying to get a duel. Musashi then defaced the sign, and posted that he would be there at a specific time. He then showed up on time. The samurai skoffed at him, and told him he would spare Musashi's life if he apologized and went away. Musashi then whooped him and (the story says anyway) only used two hits. The first was to the head, and knocked the Samurai down and unconcious. The second was to the chest, and killed him.
So, in closing, I am not "praising" this 13 y/o boy. He was one of the greatest swordsmen in the world of his time. A time in which people lived and died by the sword. He died of natural causes when he was in his 60's IIRC. His training goes to show that kids CAN be trained to have the conviction necissary to defend themselves. (even though in this instance it was not defending himself)
Also, I have no idea where you get the idea that I might think anything of a child in Zimbabwe killing anyone. I've never heard of anything like that.

I was just comparing the two scenarios. In countries in Africa, children are taught early how to kill, they are basically forced into being soldiers. Pictures of children carrying AK-47s has become a "poster" for the inhumane conditions occurring over there.
I don't think that a child born into a Samurai caste and forced to kill is much different. I don't think it's something that deserves praise or admiration is all.
So it is a direct correlation, not a twisting of what you were saying.

Yeah but the kid in Zimbabwe is most probaly killing an unarmed civilain not a highly trained samurai warrior, plus the kid in Zimbabwe most probaly has another 20 kids with machine guns in his group.
Not comparable in my eyes.

Our Sensei is the coolest in the world (sure you will disagree)
Why?
Just found out today after the clubs graduation (Richard is an orange belt now) that in Febuary we are having a visitor for a couple of weeks who will be taking classes and brushing the club up on its Kata. That Person is Luca Valdesi
I would like to think he will help iron out any problems Richard has with his kata
Which is why our sensei is the coolest around, to get all these Karateka at the top of there game to come to this little Dojo in south East London. Invaluable!!!!!
