Karate for self-defence?

Is karate any good for real life self-defence? I did a bit when i was younger and did`nt feel that it was, i may not have given it a chance though. Am thinking of starting it up again

There are many reasons why karate is good for real-world self defense, but the main reasons I can think are:
1) You can develop confidence in yourself and that alone can make you less of a target for attack.
2) You can react quicker to adverse situations. Through much practice and training, you learn techniques that can eventually be applied without wasting time having to think about what to do.
I know there are many other reasons, but these are the two that jump out at me.

At my karate club we practise self defence moves which are very useful for real life situations - as long as you remember them

You dont practice to remember...you practice for it to become intrinsic

Ditto. In a fight, thinking is the enemy. Reacting with speed and purpose is your friend.

Yes - BEFORE a physical action. Notice I said "In a fight." Meaning that, at that point, the physical action has started, and you better be reacting. If you have enough time to think before the fight starts, you might be able to avoid the fight all together.

A fight is a big series of physical actions. I agree about reactions, but you still have to be able to think some so that you can stay a few steps ahead of your opponent. Basically I can sum it up with this one quote that might find its way onto my signature:

"Think while you are reacting, it saves time."
