Since I haven't noticed very many other people on this forum who have studied Kyokushin Karate, I thought I'd provide some info for anyone who might be interested in this amazing, hybrid style.
Kyokushin(kai) Karate was developed by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama in 1955. Mas Oyama was already an expert in judo, jujitsu, aikido, and Goju Karate, and he created Kyokushin by combining elements of all of these styles. Kyokushin actually means 'ultimate truth.'
Kyokushin is a style of karate that mainly focuses on strenuous physical training, though it also includes techniques of self-defense and weapons. What distinguishes Kyokushin Karate from the traditional styles of Japanese karate is its lack of reliability on simple linear movements and its utilization of circular movements as a means of executing better attacks. Kyokushin Karate is also unique because of its requirement of strenuous physical training and conditioning. It ties in realistic fighting situations and realistic contact while sparring. Kyokushin Kumite is full contact with no pads. Punches to the head are not allowed in tournaments but kicks to the head are.

The video on limb destruction techniques is especially informative.

I keep forgetting about your publish references there.....most are non biased and informative...though I tend to disagree with minimal details on scant few....

Great post...if kicks/legs are viewd stronger than arms...why have a kick to the head and not a punch???
I think it's mainly because it's harder to kick to the head than to punch to the head. I rarely saw kicks to the head when I was taking Kyokushin. Most of our kicks were to the legs, to be honest. Which goes back to that 'limb destruction' video I mentioned earlier. "If a man can't stand, a man can't fight."

I somewhat agree-
You think...I know a one-legged man who could beat the dickens out someone who doesnt have extreme experience... (But I know your point)

As a disclaimer, none of the materials are written by me but the information I found around the internet from various sources - some are written by people promoting themselves (biased) and some are written by 3rd party (less biased). Some of the recent additions have come from wikipedia.org.

LOL Does hopping count as standing?
I will say that the leg kicks and conditioning that I trained in was some of the best, usable self-defense that I've ever learned. It only sucks that barely any of the 'limb destroying' Kyokushin techniques that I learned are things that I can actually use while sparring here in the U.S.

I thought punches werent allowed because they were faster and therefore harder to block. Also they take less actual skill. If someone's doing a double kick to your body for "points" they could be easily knocked out by a cross. But to do it with say a side kick, that would take much more timing and reflex.
Hey Souldrum,
If you went to a Muay Thai school to spar they would let you use some of you more exotic moves, just a guess anyway.
Maybe you should enter one of those underground tournaments that Unkotare (or was it Magister) was suggesting .

If I could find a Muay Thai school anywhere near where I live in Alabama, I'd be up for it. But around here it's slim pickings when it comes to MA schools. However, I have noticed some similarities between Kyokushin low kicks and Muay Thai low kicks. And we were allowed to use knee strikes (but not elbows) during sparring.

cool stuff. Kyokushin is one of my favorite styles. my dad was one of Mas Oyama's first students when he traveled to the Virgin Islands to
open up a Karate school. he said that his blows were so strong, people would be flying across the dojo. and that they also taught handicapped people when other schools were reluctant to, so the handicapped people ended up being better than the students of the schools who shunned them away.
I didnt know that it was Mas Oyama who was his teacher until we were talking about the MA movement in the caribbean during my emergency leave there. i was like wow dad....no wonder your so good
