Karate Sparring

Seeing as i'm the only guy in my platoon to pick Karate as a sport it looks like i'm going to be the one fighting in the competitions versus other platoons. Problem is we never did much sparring at our school, while i know all the moves and combinations I don't know much about the rules and tactics, wondering if you guys could help me out

(some hints and tips would be helpful aswell)

Thanks

All I can say is practice. Get some one to work with you. No matter what you do, you will be caught off guard if you don't get some experience fighting someone.

When in combat, study your opponent. Study, study, study, STRIKE! Look for open spots in their defenses and weaknesses to exploit. Also, keep your own defenses up and make sure of your own strengths. Know the good places to strike on the human body; weak spots, pressure points, etc. And make decisions in combat based on what you feel you need to do (take them out qickly & quietly, just knock 'em unconcious, or completely obliterate, etc.).

Rodders, do you know if this will be full-contact or point sparring?

For a couple inconvenient yet essential reasons I have not been able to attend my dojo for over a month; however, I have been practicing a little and have kept the majority of my skill. I've probably put on some weight too But I can lose it no problem. DAMN I miss training...God willing I'll be able to return today. Anyway, the point is, I've not attended for a month and still have my knowledge. My Sensei is the one who told me most of the info I posted earlier.

I've been fasting for the Holy Month of Ramadan (not all that inconvenient, but the month itself was a long and rough one, partly due to my not being able to attend the dojo), and my family has been having a little money trouble as well; the former is over and the latter is slowly geting better.

Sorry, I didnt mean to pry. I was concerned if it was health issues.

Yes, I am familiar with Holy Month of Ramadan.

I didn't see it as prying; you asked a question, which shows thirst at any degree for knowledge, which is something I respect.

Akai Shizuku,
Find out when you have to fight. Find out what the rules are. Get someone-anyone to train and spar with. Get or make a heavy bag and fight the bag like you would an opponent. Get in top shape and never give up. Good luck.
Thanks,
Sensei Tom

Well, as the original starter of this thread should understand;

Before going into competiton, learn the rules.

If possible, go and observe some events prior.

Excellent advice, though something I should have remembered, that I must thank you for. At home I often practice to make sure I still have the techniques right. As soon as the money problems are done with I should be able to get back in the game.
