Hey does anyone practice Shaolin Kempo Karate? There is a dojo in the city near me that teaches it. They are part of the Villari system? Can anyone explain what this all is?

Basically the system is a mix of kung fu hands and karate stances. I don't particularly care for it, but that is my own opinion. I do know many Kempo martial artist who are very talented and some teachers who do know what they are talking about when it comes to combat.
The video Complete linked made me cringe. The chin na shown left a lot to be desired. While chin na is not my forte, it was easy to tell that what was being demonstrated would not work against a persistant or truly resisting opponent. There was no triangulation, very little center defence, the stance was too tall for the applications being used in some cases, very little structure, joints were not locked out correctly, only two gate defense was used, etc. While this was obviously only one aspect of the martial art being demonstrated, it showed a lack of understanding of that aspect. If your goal is self-defense, I would stear clear of that particular school.
Well Villari's local school is quite a distance from me and friends have gone there but it is expensive and I don't have the funds for it but there is a place near me that offers Shorin-Ryu Karate. I was curious because it seems when I type in Karate in Yahoo or google it appears and seems to be a popular form of Karate.

If you continue looking. You should be able to find a school/style, to your liking. I'm not sure what big town/city,
is close to you. Good luck.

Popular in martial arts does not mean effective. More often than not, its just means good advertising.
Yeah WC you make a good point and I think that it is a belt factory because they sell videos for people to take Karate in their own house and be graded. It seems a lot of places offer Shaolin Kempo and some of them seem pretty good but it might not be for me but my friends like it. And I like going to karate not only to learn something but to meet others from around my area that like karate and the martial arts.

We all have our different reasons for learning martial arts and each is a valid as another. As long as you are getting what you wat out of whatever school you attend, then its all good. My problem arises when a school promotes itself as something it isn't...like the above school saying it teaches chin na.

Yes! YOU ARE MY FRIEND!
I do shaolin kempo karate in Salem, Oregon. I study under Master Pearlswig who used to study under Fred villari. I don't know what Villaris studios are like, but if they are anything like mine, DO IT. It is a very well rounded art and you will learn a lot. I friggin love it. Anyways, join so I can say someone else here shares my art. Plus we can discuss forms and katas that we both will know.

Yeah I saw that vid and I don't understand. He looked a little awkward in his stances. Hmnnnn, maybe this is why Master Pearl broke away
Well I will keep Shaolin Kempo in mind and every Dojo is different I think I will try a small Karate club and see if I like it, if I do I might switch to Shaolin Kempo.
