My advice is to try to get more comfortable with kicking to the body, especially since this guy is probably faster than you are. You are going to try to hit him in the head while he is already coiled up for a back kick and before you know it you are kicked in the chest. At the very least you will manage to jam up the back kick and prevent yourself from getting too hurt by it.
Back kicks come from no where, watch out for your opponent shifting weight forward.
Anyone that was posting yesterday might have noticed that I said I wanted to spar our Nat'l AAU champ. Not an ego thing I just want to see whether or not I'm fast and reactive. It would be a good way to gauge my progress.
Anyway as it turns out he wants to spar with me too . I always watch the advanced class on Mondays, since its the only one during the week and is right before my class. He was putting on his sparring gear and was like, " you need to hurry up and get to high yellow so we can spar." I tried to hide a huge grin, cuz I def didnt want to bring it up and look like an arrogant A$$, but he was already thinking the same thing I was but probably not for the same reasons I guess.
I still havent received my new belt so we'll either be waiting for a long time or a week or two.
So my question to the board is, his axe kick is infamous and he really loves to catch advancing opponents with back kicks. What are the common ways to neutralize those kicks? Also I personally dont kick much to the body I am more of a head guy, is this bad etiquette in a "friendly" sparring match, meaning will it just piss him off?
His his axe kick famous or infamous?
Studying how he sets it up and then skipping in to close the gap is a fine way.

I'm sorry I misworded that. I dont like using roundhouse kicks to the body. Thanks for the advice on the shift.

Well I guess both. If it's famous for causing mass amounts of damage or being a great weapon for defeating opponents, then would that kind of make it infamous? I dont know.
Wouldnt the skipping in to close the gap be a high risk way of shutting it down?

Even the best of men are capable of the most disgusting evil. Just as the most evil man is capable of showing kindness.
Do not be fooled into thinking your enemy's sin is worse than yours, or that your's is better than his.

It would be a very high risk thing. Basically, I would say that since you know he is really good at axe kicks just try to avoid the axe kicks all together, don't try to counter them. Focus on countering his weak points.
I guess it is hard to say what to do because each individual has a different way to set it up.
I would go so far as to say it is impossible for any of us to tell him exactly what to do, but we can give general ideas on how to deal with certain situations. It is, of course, up to the fighter to fight the fight.

I speaking of both;

No matter the preparation, if the mentality is that if you think your opponent has more skill, the fight is almost lost before it starts.

I hope black belts have more skill than white belts. But like I said I know his level of accomplishment, this would be a good way to gauge where I'm at overall.

Noting that a person is capable of beating you in something does not mean you are guaranteeing your failure. It is simply a way of creating a strategy to attempt to over come him.
