Hey guys...i recently started teaching again at my dojo. Im a 2nd dan blackbelt and im teaching a class of about 16.
I wanted to make this thread in order to get some ideas on warm up exercises. Im looking for something unique and interesting to try out in class...so if you got any ideas just post them here(and of course this isnt just tkd restricted) any interesting warm up exercises will do.
I'll provide some of the ones i've done so far for some examples.
--------Ring of Fire---------
The way this one works is that i get everybody in a circle.
then everyone has to do one exercise non-stop. I.E. Jumping Knees to your chest, little steps, push ups, jumping jacks ect.
then at the same time one person in the circle is running around the circle. once they get back in there spot the person next to them runs around.
Thus no one can stop doing the exercises until everyone has made it around the circle once.
--------PR Warmup----------
For this one i get two hand targets and have the students run around the room while avoiding each other(they cannot make contact with anyone else while running..so its kinda like dodging)
then when i clap the targets they have to do an exercise for about 45 seconds
then i clap the targets and they start running again.
I repeat it until i feel they have been warmed up sufficiently
While not fun this is a good way to get all of the parts of the body warmed.
10 jumping jacks
10 defenses ( standing --> hands were feet are --> feet spring backwards) essentially what you do if a saw was coming for your waist, so gott do it kind of quickly
10 pushups
10 crunches
10 get up drills ( while sitting --> one hand up to guard your face, the other behind you planted on the ground --> plant foot same side as hand guarding face --> free foot swings under you to meet planted hand --> stand)
10 squat jumps
Should be a circuit done 2 or 3 times. Make the students count each and every rep, they will be getting a warmup and increasing their carido endurance at the same time.
Now youre training like a Ninja!

Hello Ray! I assume you are teacing juniors.. ? i.e. games/drills?
If so, we use
frog jumps = to help improve balance (squat with hands on floor/inbetween knees.. jump high, lifting knees up to ears and land softly (without making a sound) on ball of foot)
360 frog jumps = these help with teaching 360 jumps for intermediate students
Climbers or Kick Outs= i.e. similar to "mountain climbers" single legs and double legs(both legs same time)
While teaching junior's floor drill techniques you can use Older higer ranks/instructor trainees etc. to hold focus pads/target mitts for students.. (every 5 count on technique have target holders move to another student) Inbetween Drills students try to jump to reach to pad high in the air.. (keeps kids interested and focused)
If you have standing bags, or focus shields you can have students split up in two groups and do relays:
Students: Run to bag (or shoulder roll to bag, or jump over obsticle, etc)
Bag Drills:
1. punch bag 10 times
2. kick bag 10 times
3. punch and kick bag 10 times
Also we use Blocker Pads to help students with learning blocks.. Instead of Bag Drills insert Blocking Drills.
(use simple blocks, like: low, middle and high- not complicated inner forearm/outer forearm-kifehand/ridgehand blocks)
I've got a million Good Luck in Your Classes!!

Jump spins are good to. It will help them control their body (for jumping kicks especially). Basically the idea is they have to jump as high as they can and spin a set number of times. Start with 1/4, then go to 1/2, then 1 time all the way around. If some kids can get that easily challenge them to do 1 1/2 or more.
Its funny that you bring that up Chapel. I had to start doing those drills because I cant jump and spin all the way around when my left foot is in front.

If you are doing it from a fighting stance, practice doing it in both directions on each side. You will find that one direction will be easier than the other and one leg will be easier than the other.
However start off from a ready or attention stance.
