Question poomsae/hyung

Please end my confusion, why do some TKD traditions call forms hyungs and others poomsae?

Clear and concise. +rep

Rule of Thumb: If you find two people, one of whom says 'Poomse 1' and one who calls it 'Hyung 1', you can bet that they are talking about different forms. The same goes for Taeguek Poomse and Palgwe Poomse (although both of those are in the same organization).

Taeguk are the very first forms you learn in TKD, whether the forms are called Hyung or Poomse. There are 8 forms in Taeguk 1 through 8.

Sometimes, I have heard of several schools that use the Palgwe forms for the first set. I am betting that Siroki's school is like that. However at any school, given enough time, you will eventually learn both sets (ideally). Neither set is much harder than the other.

I am sure that there are others, but the established forms that I know of in all of WTF TKD are:
Taeguk 1-8
Palgwe 1-8
9 Black Belt Forms (Koryo, Kumgang, Tae Bek...)

I'm not sure, because it is not my system, but I think ATA uses Song-Ahm (sp?) forms. Or, I could be getting two different systems mixed up... the poltics of TKD is tough to keep up with sometimes.

Taekwondo forms had a origin from Japanese kata and these were originally called Hyung. In the development of Taekwondo many of the founders wanted to remain true to the tradition of the arts that they had learned. The exception to this rule was Choi Hong-Hi, known as General Choi. He was a Shotokan black belt and very proud to be a Korean. The Korean people because of recent history had a strong dislike for the Japanese. General Choi made every effort to Korean-ize his art. He created the ChaHonRyu Hyung which were really just adaptations of the Japanese Kata that he had learned. Tae Kwon Do, was formualted to be a Korean National pastome/Sport/Art, re-developing Korean Pride

Because he was a General and was quite close to the Prime Minister Rhee Sing-Man and wielded quiet a lot of clout. The ChaHonRyu forms were included at his insistence. During the 1970’s before the World Taekwondo Federation’s attempt to destroy the Kwan System they did the same thing. They had each Kwan develop parts of what were to become the PalQue Hyung. The first set of under black belt forms developed by the World Taekwondo Federation. Each Kwan was involved in their development so that the Kwan’s would all teach them. These hyung were later replaced with the current World Taekwondo Federation beginner forms, the Taekuk Poomsae.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s the many current black belt World Taekwondo Federation Poomsae were developed. The late General Choi and his International Taekwondo Federation continue to use the Chahonryu Hyung that he developed in the 1950’s.
