I find it interesting that this would be a post you dig up
Kung fu is the name Chinese martial arts are known as now, particularly in the west. Does the name really mean that much? Does it really matter what it used to be? I understand the your desire for people to understand the history of Chinese martial arts. Its not the same as it was thousands of years ago. It transformed into something else to serve a purpose. Your post on this and similiar issues sound condescending.

Condescending? Well, out it this way, many people use things, words, subjects out of context or without thorough knowledge.
Just earlier today I heard two people talk about weight lifting and vitamins. I asked a few questions, and they thought I was speaking a different language.
(One such question, I had asked do they read the ingredients on their vitamin/protein packages-they said no. So I had asked to them to hand over their protein/vitamin container and had asked if they knew what was carrageenan and pre-digested.)

Chinese language uses alot of words conceptually. Kung-Fu has always been used in China to describe, among other things, Martial Arts.It encompasses more than simple technique, but the time, and effort and all that it entails. It is not so much "slang," but an overall picture.

Indeed, once something attunes to a name of sort, it is attached for eternity.
