Southern Mantis, particularly Jook Lum Southern Mantis is not known for cum-na sao-chin-na. It is a striking style. Many of the strikes go either "straight down Braodway", or flanking. The strikes are pinpoint accurate done to vital points (dim-mak)The slapping to the top of the head (which we do not do in our school,we are a different lineage)is so they can make some contact-whcih would ordinarally be to the face with phoenix-eye strikes. The open hand slaps allow the contact to be made, the reactins to be developed, but safely. (We use century finger gloves and headgear with face shields.)
The footwork is in most schools straight in with shuffling advancing steps and step-throughs. (Our school utilizes bot-kua footwork and is more circular at times)
You would not see this in Wah-Lum, as Wah-Lum is a Northern Praying mantis mixed with Tan Tuie. Southern is a totally different animal, er, insect.
In most cases, the elbows are held down and close to the body, but many strikes use a non-linear trajectory to go around the opponent's hands and hit from peculiar angles. |
