Kenpo vs. Kempo
What are the differences between the two? One is Japanese and the other Chinese? Did one spawn the other?

The black belt is not a mark or symbol of the end of the journey to ones mastery of the arts; rather it is the mark that one is done packing for their journey and may now take the first step in their true journey. This a journey which can not ever be complete, only traveled..."

There is no mention of animal styles in the old thread. I remember a while ago someone mentioned Villari's self defense, and how he did shaolin kempo, and mastered different animal forms. Is this just mixing CMAs with Japanese Kenpo?

Shaolin Kempo is not...well shaolin. It has taken the name and used it for marketing. I've seen a lot of Kenpo/Kempo and have friends that study these. While the style has flavorings that resemble Shaolin martial arts, it is very, very Japanese in the concepts and application. Kenpo/Kempo is not CMA, much less Shaolin.

Thank you for the help. Kempo is sort of like an MMA right? Or is it just Like that in the U.S. because of by Ed Parker?

The first time I heard the word kenpo is when Jeff Speakman was introduced to the MA movie scene in Perfect Weapon. Then, I read about American Ed Parker, and he trained a few celebrities including the late Elvis Presley (there was a pic of them sparring in the mag). Little fact I know about the art is that it use multiple strikes on the opponent, much depicted in the Perfect Weapon by Speakman.

The way Kennpo seemed to me was like a mix or karate and boxing. It was good because it begaN to teach me some boxing basics. The Founder of the school had a direct lineage to Ed Parker.

Ever try to rip cartilage? Yeah it can be done easier that any other body part due to the anatomy, but I would not say it is easy. In my opinion ripping ears off a person is a wasted technique. There are many, many other techniques that will control a person much better and can be used to disable them more effectively if needed. Not to mention any injury you do to a person that disfigures them is going to cost you money in pretty much any circumstance. Teaching this as effective self defense is bogus.

It would be absolutely disgusting as well. In the video where it's demonstrated the attacker is on top of him. You would literaly be showered in your attackers blood.

Not to mention the logistics of this are just bad. Grabbing someones ear in a fight is going to be very difficult to begin with, and speaking from experience, if you arent covering your ears / face you aren't going to be much of a challenge to do away with in the first place. Swift punch to the ear would seem more effective than ripping it off. And there's also no shower of blood to go along with it.
Or better yet, learn BJJ to deal with someone being on top of you, haha. Silly macdojos and fake promises, next thing you know he'll be teaching you how to focus your chi and knock someone out without even touching them.
