Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
I've been lucky enough not to encounter a serious injury in training or competition but have seen many! I tend to get annoying minor injuries - pulled hamstrings etc. I did get an injury i thought was quite serious when we were practising "special technique", which is basically flying kicks. As i landed on a concrete floor knee first which actually meant i couldnt get up and walk for about ten minutes due to the pain. I just let nature do its course rather than a doctor and it healed in a couple of weeks! Other injuries have included split lips from being punched in the face in competition and over-doing knuckle conditioning and damaging the bone too much. I just hope i am not tempting fate by saying i've had no serious injuries!
Yeah from time to time someone gets a shot to the head, but thats a risk you take when joinin a dojo/dojang etc. But yeah technique can fail sometimes! haha with my groin i thought nature will take its tole! haha i wish i got it checked out before hadn though. But sometimes the good old RICE (For the people that dont know Rest, Ice, compression and elevate!) helps!
please god say that you guys don't practice fly side kicks on concrete all the time without and padding or proper shoe!! that is the easiest/fastest way to screw up your knees!!
The elow injury i just posted about the other month. While I never went to the Dr. I think it was a muscle type of injury. Took almost a month to completly heal.
in my tkd class we always practise on a concrete floor for flying kicks, they just expect you not to fall over i guess! It payed off in the end when i got the gold in the ITF england championships for special technique!
B, it is not falling and hurting your knees i am worried about, it is the impact of the landing that is my concern. there is nothing to soften the landing so the shock can affect your knees. if you have supportive shoes that would absorb much of the shock.
I am not a figher but the worst injury that I saw was from a fight nite on spike. I think his name was kris from season 4. He fought someone in the cage and got hit it head with a elbow and blood started flowing from his scalp. That is the worst injury i have seen so far.

Part of not having a mat is learning to land and not hurt yourself. This goes with jump kicks, break falls and rolls. Although I think that learning on concrete or tile is bad, you should be good enough to be able to do it there.
Learning to absorb the impact of a fall is probably one of the most important skills once you get the motion of your body down in jump kicks, especially for your really showy kicks.
"Disgruntled" - I can understand that, usually bending your knees and landing in a stabilised position will absorb most shock and it isn't as bad as say jogging as it is not at frequent and continual. I injured my knee by actually landing after a kick on the knee itself - pretty painful. It has recurring effects when say my knee is knocked it becomes very painful easily so i'm not entirely sure the extent of the damaged caused!
I fractured my right tibia (shin bone) when sparring about a month ago. Very painfull!! Getting much better now tho, which is good because it totally threw my training regime!
