No...First you have to notice your skin elsewhere on the foot.

Is it cracked looking?

Is it wrinkle-looking?

If you are sure it is not, you might try to tape it up before you stretch to see if that helps. That's really the only advice I can think of right now.

Yes, it could be a case of atheletes foot, however, a martial art school may not be the prime breeding ground for it (unless the school has a shower)

as far as the wet dry thing goes....

if what happened is the same thing that happened to me: while running bare foot on a hard surface the skin on the bottom of my toe was stretched because of friction (most likely a blister was forming under and expanded the skin) and the skin eventually ripped. if that is what happened, then it won't matter if you dry it out or mosterize it because the damage is done. the riped skin will sooner or later fall off and the skin under is fresh and should be all pink and moist already. the only thing you can do is wrap it to stop further irritation and always wrap it during practice so that doesn't happen again. you will want to keep the wraps dry because moist wraps are a breeding ground. if you often have dry skin you will want to mosterize your skin especially the new skin showing to protect it. but if dry skin i a problem you should already be doing that. and if you do moisterize do not put a wrap on right away.... the wraps must always be dry or changed quickly after becoming moist.

hope that helps

Abrasion being the cause is altogether different, however general first aid is the course.

If you keep fgetting abrased there, sooner or later the skin will callused or thicken in that area.

If th skin keeps ripping, the skin won't have a chance to turn to calluses.

Well why would one allow it to do so on a regular basis.

It would be first aid sesne that if one gets a wound to treat it until it is healed rather than keep opening it.

Each time it rips, it will get stronger.

yes. but creating a callus by ripping the skin will take a long time and will be very painful and meantime you risk infiection. where ever there is regular friction a callus will also develop. it is you bodies way of creating a shield. so eventually you will develop a callus either way if you keep up your activity. try to go the safe route and avoid breaking the skin. wraping the toe will reduce the friction so the skin will not tear, but will not eliminate it so a callus will still form.

That's what I was saying, I didn't think ripping skin created callus though...

Sorry. I didnt intend to sound like ripped skin would create caluus, but the replacement would be stronger and prone to tear less each time.

burns would still form calluses... any thing that creates scar tissue would work. but you are right, dermatological ailments is another issue
