Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
Could this be "athlete's foot"? I know the skin gets more tender in that area when you have athlete's foot and it's pretty easy to pick that up at any training facility or gym where people are barefoot.
If you are sure it is not, you might try to tape it up before you stretch to see if that helps. That's really the only advice I can think of right now.
Yes, it could be a case of atheletes foot, however, a martial art school may not be the prime breeding ground for it (unless the school has a shower)

if what happened is the same thing that happened to me: while running bare foot on a hard surface the skin on the bottom of my toe was stretched because of friction (most likely a blister was forming under and expanded the skin) and the skin eventually ripped. if that is what happened, then it won't matter if you dry it out or mosterize it because the damage is done. the riped skin will sooner or later fall off and the skin under is fresh and should be all pink and moist already. the only thing you can do is wrap it to stop further irritation and always wrap it during practice so that doesn't happen again. you will want to keep the wraps dry because moist wraps are a breeding ground. if you often have dry skin you will want to mosterize your skin especially the new skin showing to protect it. but if dry skin i a problem you should already be doing that. and if you do moisterize do not put a wrap on right away.... the wraps must always be dry or changed quickly after becoming moist.
I see where your coming from, but doesn't the formation of dead skin calluses?
yes. but creating a callus by ripping the skin will take a long time and will be very painful and meantime you risk infiection. where ever there is regular friction a callus will also develop. it is you bodies way of creating a shield. so eventually you will develop a callus either way if you keep up your activity. try to go the safe route and avoid breaking the skin. wraping the toe will reduce the friction so the skin will not tear, but will not eliminate it so a callus will still form.
