In a real physical confrontation, I don't care about how much pain I cause my opponent. I just want to immobilize/incapacitate him.

I am sure you know about the Force Continuim from Law Enforcement. You only use as much force as necessary to end a conflict. Through an interaction with an attacker it may move up and down with how much force is needed.
But if one is truly skilled, their mastery would have them inflict less pain.....hmmnnnn

Do you think the concept of pain could be adressed subconciously?

Hmmmmn, good question......

Are you referring to being ready or prepared for pain, or re-focus it after its infliction?

All of those things, in addition to having an unconcious, malicious mindset of a sort bent on causing a lot of pain.

Man had a malicious mindset of causing pain for various reasons throughout history.

But in battle, I would think that pain isnt the issue.

Through their self discipline and self control they would only exert as much pain as needed to get away from the fight.

All this discussion of pain and the mind set for inflicting it just makes me think your over analyzing it.

i suppose fear plays a part, once you realise you are not made of glass then you can start taking hits

Yeah, that's a good point. But I notice that this realization can happen at varying times; I'm an orange belt, and there's a purple belt at my dojo who's afraid to spar with me because he says I'm too strong. Meanwhile there's a green belt who will gladly throw any rank of karateka everything he's got.

In some cases, fear can overcome pain.

You mean, if you're scared enough, it won't hurt as much?

Yes. fear isnt jusr a factor to cause or feel pain at higher intensity. It can also lower it
