Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
I think pain goes with the application of force at times.
If through the course of a fight I get my opponent down on the ground and he seems to be no longer a threat to me and I go and kick him in the head of few times I have exceded my application of force.
I am sure you know about the Force Continuim from Law Enforcement. You only use as much force as necessary to end a conflict. Through an interaction with an attacker it may move up and down with how much force is needed.
But if one is truly skilled, their mastery would have them inflict less pain.....hmmnnnn

Through their self discipline and self control they would only exert as much pain as needed to get away from the fight.

Yeah, that's a good point. But I notice that this realization can happen at varying times; I'm an orange belt, and there's a purple belt at my dojo who's afraid to spar with me because he says I'm too strong. Meanwhile there's a green belt who will gladly throw any rank of karateka everything he's got.
