Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
so on monday i injured my foot (left)... dunno how, probably kicked someones elbow because the injury seems to be just below my toes. anyway, i was sorta smart, i took tuesday off from Muay Thai but i decided to go today even though i was still having some problems walking on it....... yes yes yes, i know no MA when injured you just screw yourself up more. but MA is really fun i didn't want to miss it (whine)..... that and MA is the only thing in my life right now not stressing me out.
anyway i made it part way through warm up (AKA a hella lot of running) and then i could barely stand.... (yes i know, like i said stupid!) but i went because i could not stand not going to MA and now i am going to be out because of injury.... HELP!!
how do i get well quick? like super quick! i already have withdrawl and it just happened! i will try any weird thing you have heard of (keeping in mind i am poor).... if you heard from a crazy guy on the corner that 10L (i think that is 2 1/2 gallons for the americans ) of green tea an hour helps i will try it even if you are pretty sure he was just trying to sell you green tea
#1, if it hurts that much, go to a doctor and make sure you don't have a fracture (this means broken bone. Before anyone brings it up, medically, there is no difference between the words "fracture" and "break"). I've heard that it can take awhile to see a doc in Canada, but I'm not sure about that, so I'm making the first suggestion I'd make to a US citizen.
If it is a fracture, the only way to speed the healing is to have it set and held in place (either with a cast or splint, depending on location), and DO NOT WALK ON IT!
Otherwise, the last five words of that last paragraph are your best bet. Wrap it with an Ace bandage.
I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like it's going to be awhile.
You may want to take an anti-inflammatory, like aspirin. (I have a stock of celebrex and vioxx for short term problems) If it's tendon inflammation due to repeated stress (I've hurt my foot just behind the toes by putting too much weight on the ball of my foot), this will help speed things up greatly.
Good luck and I feel your pain. I had to skip karate last night due to SI problems.
Edit: Oh, yeah, and you're not stupid, just overenthusiastic. You're stupid if you do it again. That means that you don't learn your lessons.

I can totally relate. I hurt my ribs months ago, but still have pain from it because I just can't miss more than one class at a time. I know the kind of activity that strains my injury, namely grappling, but I'm easily drawn into practice and once involved I forget all about it until after class.
yeah the wait here can get bad... one time i waited 2 hours to get into an appointment! a walk in can be at least 3 hours. (the quality of health care is more an alberta problem i think becuase we have a lot of rich a-holes that elected in a gov that doesn't care about anyone but the rich )
thanks for the advice, i don't think it is a fracture becuase if there is no pressure on my foot i can move it fine without pain. doctors are not often helpful so i will do self medication first. not to mention that the pain did not get bad until the day after the injury and during class it gradually got worse, thus i am pretty sure it is not a sudden fracture.
i have it wrapped right now and i will probably wait until after work to take a anti infamitory... i don't want to kill the pain and then over work it without realizing it, but i have it well wrapped.... it is wrapped so that it reduces mobility, but the circulation is not cut off. that is right right?

I have no idea what you mean about rich people running the government... Wait, yes I do.
If you can move your foot when there's no pressure on it, you're probably right, but I just wanted to clarify. I didn't think it was a sudden fracture. It sounded like it might have been a stress fracture. A stress fracture is when a bone breaks after repeated stress. It starts as a tiny little crack that expands. The pain, as well, starts small and grows as the crack grows.
I'm sorry you don't have good docs in the area. I don't know what I'd do without the doctors that I know. I don't go to them often (not even once a year), but when I do, it's always for something worrisome.
what was the stuff they used in karate kid?? just kidding. so by the sounds of it free health care= crappy health care, and paying for health care =kinda crappy...interesting
I can tell you about the old fashion way, and a more modern way, but kinda dangerous.
1st you can just deal with the pain and push yourself by keeping your mind on your goal and pushing the pain out of your mind.
The other way is to take a cortizone shot into the foot, it will breakup any fluid that rests there and make the foot numb all but a small burn sensation.
Despite what I listed above your best bet would be alternate between icing and using a heating pad and go to see a doctor.

Actually, I think that disgruntled is right about the bad health care being an Alberta thing. I've read about the quality of health care in other parts of Canada, and it just blew me away. The #1 problem is that, for specialists, the wait for an appointment can be weeks or even months if it isn't life-or-death.
Not that they have a perfect health care system. Ours really sucks, though, unless you can afford really good insurance. I used to work at a doctor's office, and it's unbelievable what insurance companies try to claim as unnecessary and therefore not covered. One kid was going to lose the ability to walk by the time he became a teenager. Once his bones stopped growing, the doctors would be able to do surgery to fix the problem. Otherwise, three sets of braces for his growth period would head the problem off, and he would probably never need surgery once his body had stabilized. Surgery costs at least 6,000 dollars per leg. Each of the sets of braces costs, at most, 2,000 dollars. The insurance company said that they would cover the surgery, but not the braces. So they were willing to pay more to put this kid through the pain and frustration of losing the ability to walk before fixing the problem.
Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.
Jen, a good rule of thumb is "if it hurts, go see the doctor". It's just not worth not checking out with the doctor. If it's not a fracture or a break, the doc will tell you that and tell you what to do - if it is a break the doctor can fix that, too. It's far better to spend the 3 hours waiting at the doctor's office than to try to "home remedy" it for 2 weeks and possibly cause more damage. The longer you put off the trip to the doctor, the longer you put off your recovery and MA training - at least that's how I see it.
Here's a short story of why I feel like that. About a year ago, I had a small bump appear on my back. I really didn't pay much attention to it and didn't let it bother me. Over the past year it has grown to be about as big as a golf ball. My wife had been telling me to go get it checked out for months - I finally went last Thursday and the doctor had to cut it out to remove it. It was a cyst, no cancer or anything to worry about and it could have been taken care of with medication or a simple procedure if I had went to the doctor a year ago. Instead I am out of MA for a week now with 8 stitches in my back! The stitches don't come out until next Thursday, but I'm going to try to go back next week and see how it goes.
Anyway, good luck and let us know how it is going.
I've got about a hundred stories like Supercrew's. When I worked in medical scheduling, I heard all sorts of stories about people waiting too long. That's why my first instinct was to say "go to the doctor."
However, I also understand not liking going to the doctors, because I don't go very often. (It's only when things get bad). A good compromise between the two concepts might be ice/heat for a period of time, let's say 24-48 hours. Keep off it. No martial arts during this time. If it doesn't feel any better by 24, or if it doesn't feel significantly better by 48, you probably should go see a doc about it. Any longer and if it is a fracture, the treatment process is going to be unpleasant, because they'll have to rebreak the bone to set it.
bones in your feet are very delicate, it sound like you hur your phallangees(im not sure about the speeling) if you say its at the bottom of your foot or could be your metatarsols so i sujest the docters.

i am not going to lie, still have not gone to the docs, but the foot is doing better. i can stand on it and sorta kinda walk fine.
the health care here is really excellent, don't get me wrong, but the province is incharge of health care and alberta is the riches but worst run province. the stories for places like SK (where they care about their fellow human being) it doesn't sound as bad.... and sadly our free heath care isn't even free in AB ($40 a month unless you are low income).....
today at work they were really nice and i was allowed to sit all day and do other work.... normally i run around all day. that really helped. plus i iced it last night. i kept it warpped all day too which has helped. i figure since it is improving i will hold off with the doctors. worst case senerio i have to go in for blood tests so if it is still hurting when i go in for the results i will get it checked out (i might have crohns).
oh question.... i wanna stay active, would going on an exercise bike be ok? i would let my foot heel a little more.
