I know how you feel. I bruised my ribs months ago when grappling with my instructor. Its only until now that I don't hurt anymore. The problem I had was always going back to class and working out to hard and never giving it time to heal on its own. Don't put any stress on it if you can help it.

Rodders (and Shirindo, sadly) are right. Wait for it to go down, and try to avoid moving in ways that aggravate the injury.
Ribs are both difficult to care for and really easy that way. In most cases, all you have to do is wait for them to heal, but waiting is the only thing you can do. Even with breaks, your doctor can only tell you to take it easy, unless the break is really severe or displaced, in which case they might be able to pin it. (This doesn't mean don't see a doctor for severe ribcage injuries.)

Bruised ribs

dasher43,

I am glad that your ribs are on the mend. Anytime you get bruised ribs you should put ice on it right away. Try not to re-injure the same area. I have had lots and lots of em. The hardest part is making sure you don't keep re-injuring them.
Thanks,
Sensei Tom

I'm sorry. He's right. I completely ignored what I just automatically do with such injuries. Ice is your friend in any injury that might cause inflammation (as it seems you already know), and of course, with any injury, if you feel the need for painkillers, take them. (Aspirin and Tylenol will also help with inflammation)

i think thats why my ribs healed quicker because of ice and rest and they are nearly all better, i was worried because ribs can crack easy and they take time to heal and i didnt really wont to miss my martial arts.

marksmarkou is a jewel in the rough

Hi, Funny you should mention it. I took a side kick on Friday to the ribs. Saturday the pain was bad. Its now Monday and the pain has nearly disappeared. Rest seems to be the key, but if it still hurts after a few days or when you breath, it may be worth getting it checked as a rib could be broke.
