Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
what kind of injuries have you gotten from martial arts if any!i was in taekwon-do for 3 mths when one night in training i slipped on the wodden floor in the dojang and smack on the floor broke my nose and also split the skin open, was totally horrific i was passing out etc!now im more careful as far as sparring.it was my worst and only fear of tkd!
then few weeks ago i was holding a break board for the first time for my husband a fellow martial artist (tkd also) and he missed the target and kicked full force where my wrist was and it bent backward and i had it on a splint for 2 weeks the pain was so bad in my lowe thumb area ! now i dont hold the board anymore!its finally better!woo hoo so back to pushups!
I had a lot of injuries, but I think that the worst of them is one that still hurts me and doesn't allow me to use my left foot as I'd like to, last year in competition I kicked the guy's elbow with my left foot damaging one of the extensor tendons, the major one.
I've also broke a couple of bones but those healed ok.
I think broken bones hurts much more, but ripped tendons take much longer to heal.
how did you train to get arthritis and rheumatism from MA?
can you tell us, so we can prevent this kind of training?
Years of doing things that I thought was the thing to do, against what I was told not to do.
Conditioning:
By this I mean hardcore. Pounding at things with areas such as the hands, knuckles, elbows, knees, shins, etc.
This may have been a necessity long ago, but in modern society, unless one is going into fighting as a profession, it is over-hype and over kill. The arguement from people, most who have not let the years catch up/go by, is that I wasnt doing it right. I was doing it right, despite it being against his wishes, one of my instructors decided to train me that way.
Hyper extension:
Continued practice of, say like; elbow hyperextension.
Also, kicking without resistance. Like kicking so hard and fast without a sturdy target to regulate hyper extension of the knees.
Feet; the constant pounding, even though the toes are not making contact as often, time takes its toll.
Environment, Age, and Indivdual:
Environment- If you reside in a very cold environment, although maybe seasonal, will have effect on continued practice as stated above. If you reside in a very warm, esp humid environment, it does the same like cold.
Age- As we grow old, things deteriorate. Plain nature of anything-living or not. However, though through age comes wisdom, though wisdom could be short lived, or hypomnesia.
Individual- There are some exceptonal individuals who dont suffer such from the practice of martial arts when they get up in age. There are those who do, but wont let in be known, in order to remain in denial of aging.
I cant tell people what to do, or not to. Just as my instructor teaching me conditioning could not.
When I point out certain things, some of which is controversial, because it goes aginst a person's opinion or belief.
Though my opinions may not be enitirely my own, which some are posted in somewhat apriority, to see what others will say, and I am very dogmatic, thus causing controversy.
Thanks for your reply/post
