Martial Arts InjuriesDiscuss how to deal with martial arts injuries and illnesses here
When I am doing side thrust kicks my hip joint starts to hurt.
Not horrible bad but just enough to be annoying. After I stop doing them the pain eventually goes away.
Does this happen to anyone else and how can it be avoided?

Are you sure it is the joint, or is it a muscle?

Reoccuring joint pain when performing certain movements can indicate some diseases and/or joint damage. While it is probably pain by over flexing muscles, if the pain persist when doing side kicks, I'd see a doc, just to be safe.
well. how old are you? your legs are probably just adjusting to kicking, and this feeling will pass in couple of weeks. i had same problem for about a month. evrythime i side kick, or hook kick, my hips would hurt. and i only wanted to do jump side kicks to relieve the stress. how long have you been training?

I somewhat agree, though with any activity that one has started, some things may take a "getting used to".
However, as I have seen through my many experience, not everyone can do the same technique.
In other words, everyone's body is different

That post before mine, was that for post counting? How about the one after?
Hey, my post count has the same palaverment tone as anyone elses'
My hip was really hurting bad my first 3 months and then i started stretching better and longer. I felt much better. I would get flush against the wall with the back of my legs extended on the wall. I will spread them out as far as I can and hold it for as long as I can.

Kicks above the waist arent very good for the hip. Thats why lots of older TKD guys need hip replacements early in life. Take chuck norris for example. Lots of gymnasts are in the same boat. I guess its the price you pay for sports though. They all kill us down the road
I am living proof that high impact activities will catch up with you down the road. I have a slipped disc and arthritis in my spinal canal. I had to close my school and drop out of class. I could not get out of bed the first couple of weeks it hit me. I am lucky to keep my job. With physical therapy we are hoping to push the disc back and maybe the artritis is not pinching the spinal cord. So far - so good. I hope to re-open in September. This is due to wear & tear over 36 yrs.

Martial Man,
Thanks for the input. I am battling back by going to physical therapy & doing exercises for my back on my own. I hope to open my dojo again in September.

Sensei Tom, I'm going through my own battle to get back to training so I can relate in how frustrating it can be. Best of luck and hope you're back in the saddle soon!
Well in my view most people who get back pain from kicks and or BJJ. When it comes to the movement in the hips, pushing and pulling etc. It is your Hips and your leg getting out of movement/Place. Being that I teach BJJ and MMA 5 days a week. I usually hit the Chiroprator about once every month and it does the trick for me. Wish you the best
