They started showing the preview for Protector starring Ong Bak's Tony Jaa during UFC Ultimate Fight Night and it looked good. It's supposed to open nationwide in September.
I was very impressed with the trailer. I guess the guy does all his stunts, like Jackie Chan used to do. And some of his stunts are crazy. Can't wait to get the DVD so I can see behind the scene stuff.
OK. I've finally seen this move as it came out on DVD last week.
The storyline was pretty bad..... really bad. Don't even try to follow it. There were many scenes with Thai and Chinese dialog and they didn't even bother sub titling it for non-Thai, non-Chinese people to understand what's going on.
As for the action. I'm mixed here as well. I like Tony's ability to do all his own stunts and not using the wires and stuff. However, after a while, it was getting a bit ridiculous. I mean, taking on like hundreds of guys all by himself? Then, later on taking on like 4 giants when he had trouble with just 1. Once the reality gets away from you, the enjoyability goes down quite a bit.
The only memorable scene is non-stop non-cut continuous 4 minute action scene. I watched the behind the scene and they spent a month preparing that scene and did 5 takes to get it right.
I agree the storyline is confusing dont try to figure it out. Action was good, I agree kicking the 100 guys butts got a little tiring after awhile, I did enjoy the guy who did Capoiera (I am sure I just butchered the spelling) he was interesting.
I just watched it and it was pretty ridiculous. The extreme sports gang fight with brightly colored spray paint? The Segway get-away? Johnny's "Punk" henchmen? I think I saw one guy wearing a Stone Cold Steve Austin shirt. And let's not forget the visually stunning boat/helicopter crash. The "put 1,000 guys through every inanimate object" action got old faster than Mark Wahlberg's music career and this list combined. All that, on top of the crazy elephant plot I couldn't watch anymore than an hour of it. I felt like I was trapped in 1992.
Ong-Bak is a superior film in every ways. It even has a decent story for a MA flick. I hope Mr. Jaa doesn't continue down this current path of awesomeness. I've seen him do better.
i am going to defend the story line. we live in a world that is so detached from nature that protecting an elephant is not high up on our list on things that might happen to us before we die... but lets keep in mind that Tony Jaa grew up with elephants and his family raised them for a living. if you switch the elephant to a brother or girlfriend you would have a standard western plot that we all accept. i liked that the plot was very un-western.
I actually thought the movie wasnt that bad, although the stunts and fight scenes where a bit over the top. The best fight scene for me was in the temple using the Capoiera style.
Also I was wondering if anyone else noticed that the big guy in the temple was the same guy from Fearless.

i loved the fight scenes!! it is also impressive to note that no wires or anything was used.
