I have to agree that Ong Bak is the best MA movie that has come out recently just because it adds something new to MA chareography. I think we have seen same old chareography repeatedly done before.
It's good but after you watch the 'best of Ong Bak' videos on youtube, you really don't have to watch the movie. The plot lines aren't really that interesting.
Something gets taken from him> Goes to the city> Finds somebody to help him find somebody> Beats up henchman> Big fight> The end.
I watched a movie last night called 'Throwdown', it was a Hong Kong flick that focused on Judo. It wasn't a traditional MA movie which focused on just the fight scenes, it was more... Dramatic I guess. More focus on the development of characters, storylines. Quite a good film, though to be honest I was expecting blood, gore and a lot of people's neck being broken. Got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes though... That's gotta say something.

Ture, but then again most movies can be broken down into a few phrases, just look at my review for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

From this discussion we know that the only way to enjoy a MA movie is to only enjoy the fight scenes. If you start thinking of the theme, plot and characterization, you will get frustrated. If you want drama, go watch a drama. I did watch Throwdown and agree with you. Good acting plus a great story around a martial art scene. I wish I was as young as a kid when I went to see an action movie, I just want to see action, action, action. but as you grow older, you tend to look beyond the actions, for the essence of the story.

I'm not sure if I would call Throwdown a Martial Arts movie, it's got very captivating, unique fight scenes but... They are a bit... Art-like, the moves aren't very complex, the dude Tony uses 'Ippon-Seoi-Nage' throughout the first bar brawl. There just aren't enough fight scenes I don't think.
