If talking about ginseng, I think there are only two - Siberian and Korean.
If you are talking about species as in race, then it's a whole different discussion.
Actually there are about a dozen. They fall under the Araliaceae perennial plants.
Korean Chinese and Vietnamese have different species. Sinberisn is not actually ginseng, though it is a misnomer of another type of plant.
Amercian is favorite among Asians as Yin.
However, as i stated before;
It is said that the American species is better than the Asian, though I dont know why. And I get different info on its purposes. (All species)
I still will like to know what are other things said about jogging. Good and bad.

Jogging, eh, I have never understood why going 50% or less for a long time has ever been considered impressive.
Personally its a waste time, literally. I need to get the most out of a 30 minute window as I can. Therefore going full speed is much more effective. I mean if I can get used to going full speed for longer durations that has to be building my cardio endurance right?
Spinach, whats the deal with veggies. Arent they used by the body for vits and mins, more so than actual energy. I pretty much eat them for the antioxidants and to clean out my intestines, as I eat a lot of meat and protein shakes.
Is this a false sense of purpose on my part?

Actually MartialMan is quite right in saying that korean, chinese and vietnamese ginseng is all different. I will also say that the ginsengteas have a very small dose of ginseng so they are pretty safe. siberian ginseng has very few properties to it other then heat and it is the most commonly marketed types of ginseng which is why most people should simply beware.
About the acupunture, I agree with you. Even as a tcm practitioner I don't have much faith in acupuntures ability to treat internal problems. Although there are somethings it can do extremely well like dealing with acute pains, assisting in the recovery of sports related injuries and lowering fevers. But I am not sure about alot of the other things that it is claimed to do. Most of my interest lies in herbs since I have seen the most amazing things done with them. For example I was clinically diagnosed with frozen shoulder at two general practicioners and told that is was an incurable disease and that my only option was physio and steroid injecting into the bursa for acute relief while I waited for the 3years long symptoms to die down. I go depressed and went to my herbalist who said it was fine and that I should cheer up. Then he got rid of my condition in 11 days. I felt fine at 7 days but it took 11 for me to feel like normal again. I went to the doctors after who thought my recovery was just bizaare. That is just one success story. It really is that cool which is why I chose to study it.

Hey dude
I believe alot of people think it is bad because of the risk of overuse injuries. Which is true to an extent. Most people only need to jog two to three times a week though and if you stick to that you won't be overusing anything. People running on hard surfaces everyday is one of the main reasons this thought has been perpetuated.
The other reason it is looked down upon in say athletic and martial areas is because it is a slow aerobic exercise and most sports and martial arts are anaerobic in nature. This is also true to an extent, as one doesn't throw slow punches in a boxing match it isn't going to prepare the average person for the rigors of competition.
Regardless aerobic condition is very important so everyone should aspire to reach a good level of aerobic fitness. Once established it is easy to maintain, a long jog once a week is enough to maintain that conditioning for the rest of your life.

First up, yes it will improve you cardio as you continue to improve. Of course alot of people don't have the same determination to train like you do. And for anyone reading, he really does train hard. However such hardcore conditioning will take from your weekly allowence of recovery whereas slow cardio days are kind of like a break so you can mix it up depending on how your recovery is faring at the time.
As for the veges thing you are really quite on target. It is the problem that hygenist vegans cen never come to terms with. If you only eat veges and nothing else you will become emaciated and weak. It is close to impossible for someone to get there daily caloric requirements from veges alone and if they did, they would be spending most of their time either eating or on the toilet. But if you are eating meat and fats as well, you can handle the lower calorie count without losing muscle mass. This is a great way to lose weight. However once you have reached an ideal weight it is good to start adding more energy to ones diet.
great part about fruit and veg is that they are easy energy which healthy and quick to digest. So you can eat them as much as you like really and keep ones metabolism burning the whole day. Great stuff.
Great information, Spinach. Thanks alot. My wife has been cleared for exercise (in moderation, of course) so we are hoping to be able to maybe start walking in the evenings together as a start. It is hard with the baby and getting homework done with our 8 year-old. Then TKD classes from 5PM - 8PM 2 or 3 days a week and where did all my time go? I guess the biggest thing that you have not mentioned is time-management to make the time to take care of yourself.
Thanks again for helping me think things through on this. Complete's question could have also been one of mine. Your answers have got me thinking. I'm sure I'll have more questions for you soon.
Its true I didn't hit on time management, although I wanted too. As a trainer the best way to keep some on the road to success is to give them challenges which are most applicable to their current situation. So when people complain about not having time the best thing to do is somethat that will work around the constraint. Then once they are acheiving something and making positive actions they often become motivated and will reciprocate positively to working on time managment.
Thing is, teaching someone time management is kinda harsh which is why is isn't always hit on straight away. You see, people always have time. There are very few people who legitamatly don't have time to exercise. And if your day is really so full then set your alarm 15 minutes earlier and just like that you have found time. 15 minutes is a lot of time to crack out a few sets of squats and push ups. Some people complain that they don't have the energy for it however when they start to workout it is amazing how their energy level increase. This is because feelings of lethargy are often linked to inactivity. By the way I am not saying you are any of these things I am simply explaining my experiences with such clients.
I need 3 or 4 people to +rep Spinach. Giving advice like this out for free that he could normally charge for to faceless names on a publicly available medium takes a huge amount of courage resisting the 'gate keeper' trend in modern education. Above all, he is following through on his advice. You are an inspiration to us all. (I would start a similar thread, but no one here cares about math. )
I have heard rumors that taking in fiber can increase your metabolic rate leading to certain foods having a net calorie loss. The major rumor about this is that it takes more energy to digest celery than it is worth. After a little research on line I have found that there is some opposition to this idea of a 'negative calorie food.' There is also a drink (I believe it has caffeine in it) that claims to burn about 40 calories in one can. It is called Enviga.
What is your take on these 'negative calorie foods' and can I really lose weight by eating a lot of them instead of exercising like some websites propose? (Note: I don't plan to stop working out, but I do want to eat more efficiently when I am not specifically dining for flavor as opposed to sustenance.)

Thankyou Chapel, I appreciate being appreciated however I am hardly worth all that praise.
Now.. This negative calorie business.
To an extent it is true. By eating throughout the day you are 'stoking the fire' so to speak, and things like celery have almost no calories so it would indeed help you to lose weight. However people that do celery diets usually aren't working out as well as they just don't have the energy(read calories) to do it. The aim is to find a happy space in between that.
People have probably noticed that I am wary of eating grains. I believe they are an unnatural part of our diet and is one of the reasons we have an increasingly obese society. Complex carbs are indeed complex, they have alot of energy in a small amount and take a long time to digest. Over the period of time after eating we are receiving constant energy however our energy needs might not match our intake so it will often join our energy stores(read adipose connective tissue(read fat)).
Of course eating no calories isn't hte answer either as the bodies caloric needs will come out of your body. So people doing things like that are burning fat, muscles and connective tissues. But eating too much isn't good either. So stoke the fire with simpler natural calories that will match our current needs, things like most fruit, veg, nuts and natural fats. These will be used and not stored, helping you to lose weight and keep your muscle and have an active lifestyle. As you can see just by not eating your grains and flours and the like you are able to facilitate weight loss.
Hey!
So i figured since all the other advice was spectacular i'd shoot a question?
How can i gain more muscle?
What food to eat, what exercises to do.......HELP!!!
Spinach for your main meal of the day. What should be in it so it is healthy but also has a good amount of energy?
thanks
Well as an example:
Something like a palm sized piece of steak or pork fillet with plenty of steamed veggies. For flavour feel free to melt some butter over the veggies as it not only tastes great and adds usable energy but also assists with the absorbtion of the vitimins and minerals in the veges. Now steam lightly and cook lightly. Steak should always be pink in the middle and veges should be really green and not wilting. This ensures all nurtients will be present and accounted for and will make for easier digesting and less waste products.
Another example is some things I would have in Japan. Things like thin slices of pork fried with a bit of pork fat, fresh ginger, sprouts, carrots and cabbage. It makes a mighty meal that is both healthy, keeps you intestinal tracked clean and tastes awsome. Another is ton katsu which for those who don't know is a kind of battered/crumbed deep fried pork (Me and my japanese family love pork if you hadn't guessed by now) served with heaps of raw shredded cabbage. Simple but good and exceeeeeeeeeedingly tasty.
I hope this gives people some ideas about what to put on their plate. Of course I am sure there are plenty of people who find my tastes to be appaling so just mix it up.
Hey!

Well the first step is to work out. I know it seems obvious but plenty of people don't follow this step and wonder why they aren't getting results. I take it you are wanting to do this in the gym or you have equipment at home...? I shall assume that for the moment. For exercise all you need is a push, a pull and legs.
Push: Bench Press
Pull: Standing Bent Over Rows
Legs: Squats or Deadlifts
if it is your thing one can supplement with bicep curls and lateral raises to develop the shoulders.
Now do them all in one workout. Full body workouts are the best because the large amount of growth hormone released to help repair the legs will also be harnessed by the upper body.
Now for a routine. I will state now that this is not unique to me, this is a routine from a great book you can get for spare change called "Super Squats". It will make you bigger and stronger, it is an excellent routine.
Bench 3 sets 10 reps
Bent over Rows 3 sets 10 reps
Standing Bicep curls 2 sets ten reps
Lateral Raises 2 sets ten reps
Squats 1 set 20 reps
Russian Twists 2 sets 20 reps
For the bench and rows use a weight you can just lift for ten reps and choose the lowest of the two exercises. This is a very important rule to always stick to, it will ensure even development. For the curls and raises same deal, something you can do for ten reps.
For the squats you will use a weight you can lift for 10 reps. Of course you will be lifting it for 20. This is achieved through determination and deep breathing. Once you get to 10 you will have had enough, take a few deeeeep breaths and do another rep. Keep breathing hard until you can get out another rep but don't put that weight down. By the 17 rep you will want to die and by 20 you will want to climb ontop of your house and scream out random manly challenges(partially as a by product of the masses of growth hormone which is flooding ones body).
Do this workout again when you feel up to it. Once a week is fine to start with but never go over a weeks break. After a while your body will be a recovery machine and twice a week will be very possible.
Here's the other thing, every work out, if you manages to complete all your sets and reps, increase the weight a little bit. This is progressive overload and will force results each and every time you train.
As far as eating when training like this.. Eat alot. Lots of good food though, not kfc. eggs for breakfast and tuna sandwiches for lunch and meat and vege for dinner. Eat fruit whenever you get hungry as when doing routines like this one appitite tend to increase somewhat.
Finally sleep well at night, a take a nap during the day if you can.
Follow these rules and you will be on your way to being a mighty man indeed. Not just bigger but much stronger. Stick with it for 8 weeks and when you are at a size you like get back to us and we can shift it up into pure performance training.
ok thanks for the advise. but why does the meat have to be pink in the middle?
Many reasons. As SirDarkSol has pointed out in a different thread it lowers any possible carcinogen count. A bigger reason still is that by being pink(not red, but pink) means that the proteins haven't been denatured. You see when you cook it to a crisp the proteins get damages and this causes problems for our digestive systems. For starters you won't absorb as much of the protein, secondly you will have more waste products to clog the intestinal tract. And there are others but just trust me, pink is best. And tastiest.. hungry now...

What did you say your day job was?
Currently nothing, which is why I have the time to do this
Seriously being in japan for 6 months and therefore out of the workforce for 6 months doesn't do one any good. I have become disallusioned(spelling?) enough with gyms and modern trainers that I am more then happy to stick it to the man and provide this info for free.
I would like to point out that this is a thread for anything health and fitness related so let the questions roll.
Also I think I will only be able to keep this up at this quality for another couple of weeks so get in now.
