If you want to lose large amounts of weight fast then it is certainly worth your time. It is best to use this method in a concerted effort to lose weight as it is hard to maintain for long periods of time, as you said, as it does require alot of attention. There are ways to cheat this of course, by eating fruit or things like carrots, you will get hungry more often and will desire to eat more often, and those items are not difficult to prepare. In this way you will become very healthy and lose weight. Eating like this for a large part of the day will also have you feeling bright and alert. This is why I always recommend that people stick to raw fruit and veg for the first half or more of the day, by default it will be awsome, confusing details not necessary. And this is easy to stick to because of the ease of preparation.

Take it easy folks,

Spinach

Well I have a tournament coming up in about a week and a 1/2 (sept 22nd) and im trying to cut some weight for it. The only problem is that weigh in is the same day as the tournament (not the day before) so dehydration wont work.

So far I have been doing more cardio and less weights. If I do any weights its very light weights with a lot of reps. I have cut out all junk food (chips, cookies, cake, etc) and have added more fruits and veggies to my diet. I have also tried to cut back on dry carbs (this is very hard but I'm trying my best). I am also drinking some prune juice this week for obvious reasons. Im also trying to drink a lot of water and eat a lot of fiber.

Any other advice for cutting weight by the 22nd?

I see. Don't eat any junk food, no grain based food, no potatos, no suger. Eat only fruit and vege till dinner. Long cardio one day, sprints in the morning the next. Alternate to burn muchos fat and avoid burning out. Eat good quality meats and fish and lots of veg at night. Continue like this, making the second last day short cardio, and the last day total rest and recuperation.

Do this and you will achieve your goals, gain more energy and kick ass.

Meat? Really? Is that just for the protein or other reasons?

I can vouch for this approach - its the sort of diet I have been eating over the last 6 months, coupled with martial arts training 4 times a week I have managed to shift 42lb and increase my strength at the same time.

Spinach,

Can you recommend any herbal treatments for hematomas. I got an inpressive heel kick to the cheek bone over two weeks ago. My cheek still has a realy hard swelling on it which is really painful. Have had it checked out by a doctor when it first happened - nothing broken.

Tell me about carbs
I know you have good carbs and bad carbs (low and high glycemic index). They also say that if carbs are not used then they are stored as fat? Is that correct? How long do you have to use these carbs before they start being stored as fat?

I need some advice, i'm a slightly overweight 14 year old kid. My exercise is limited as i cant play in the street due to charvs, thugs or whatever you want to call them. I'm resitricted to my backyard which has a trampoline (14ft).

I have low self esteem issues because of very unsupportive parents who name call etc....

Also my parents cant cook wont let me or themselves learn so everything i eat is out of a box. I am also addicted to an online game called World of Warcraft. I like sports but there are no other kids where i live that wont try and attack me with a knife (thats one of the reaons i took up TKD). Personally i think i have done well not to have become an obiese monster as i have a very unhealthy lifestyle, can you help me?

Spinach won't be here for a while as he moved to a house with no internet connection...

There is no substitute for regular exercise and healthy diet to maintain the proper weight and healthy lifestyle.

You listed all these things that prevent you from being healthy. It sounds like you already know the answer, you just need to get the will up to actually do it. There is no magic pill to lose weight quickly and healthfully.

Ok...since spinach isnt here Ill try to give as much advice as I can give. Granted im no Dr like he is

First nutrition - Obviously eat healthy. Its harder to do since with the parental situation but it can be done. Maybe ask them to buy whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Frozen veggies instead of canned. If you have to get fast food get grilled chicken instead of beef or fried chicken. Replace your fries with salad or something else.

As for carbs in general...stay away from things that are bleached and refined. You might also want to google the glycemic index (this will tell you what carbs are good carbs and which are bad). Bad carbs - potatoes, white bread, sugar. Good carbs - veggies, oats, wheats, etc. And its better to eat "dry" carbs (breads, oats) during the day and "wet" carbs(veggies) at night. We need carbs but if we can we should stay away from the bad ones.

Also, eat 5-6 times a day. This will help increase your metabolism and burn more calories. The key is to eat small and eat often. For your 3 main meals make sure they are meals. But for the other 2-3 times you eat, eat something smaller. A can of tuna, some fruit, a salad, etc.

Vitamins/supplements - a daily vitamin is good for everyone. You need your omega 3's (it would be better if you could eat fish but if your parents wont make it then a pill will help). There are a lot of others out there as well that are worth taking but its up to you.

Water - drink it...no...chug it! At least 2 liters a day. "Water is a catabolic substance, meaning it actually takes your body energy to digest it and let it go through your system. You lose fat just from drinking it. A cool fact is the colder the water the more calories it burns. To keep your body in homeostasis (balanced function) it actually takes energy to keep your body warm as the cold water goes into your system. You burn 150 calories extra a day just from drinking 1 gallon of icy water."
Also..."The kidneys can't function properly without enough water to filter them clean. They don't work to their full capacity when dirty or overloaded. Now, when the kidneys cannot finish all their work some of that load is dumped onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to burn off stored fat into usable energy." When the liver is doing the work of the kidneys, it's not working to burn fat to its full potential.

Exercise - Do it! Both cardio and weight training. Cardio is great for burning fat and calories. Since your stuck at home, skipping rope would be great. Jumping Burpees are good (google them). Depending on how big your yard is you can run the lenght of it and jog back, then run the length, jog back, etc. Jumping jacks.

As for weight training, im not sure if 14 year olds should be using weights or not (someone else can chime in here) but I know you can def be doing body weight exercises. Squats, lunges, push ups, pull ups, ab exercises (not just sit ups), jumping squats, tricep dips. When at rest your body is still burning calories. A lb of muscle burns more calories than a lb of fat does. So the more muscle you are building, the more calories you will burn even when you are resting or not doing anything.

Ok....I know that was long but I hope it helped. If you have any ?'s just let me know. Hopefully Spinach will be back soon as well.
