Martial Arts Training & ExercisesDiscuss martial arts training and exercises here
Well...Let me see here. I hope I count. I own a school, and work that school as well as work a full time job. I often find it difficult to train for MYSELF. I have no problems with training my students. My job never conflicts with my class times though. I guess I'm lucky that way because I have a set schedule. Some of my students are not so lucky though, and they suffer because of it. To get around the training for myself, I often do it at home. Whether or not I get to train with my instructor (who incidently lives in Washingotn State and I live in Florida) I still get to train. The training is learning the technique and then practicing it to the point where you can effect the technique. You don't necissarily need the instructor there while you practice. Just my opinion.
I used to train regularly when I was a university student but once I graduated and got a full time job, I really did not have the time to train martial arts on regular basis. I resorted to just training on my own or with few friends whenever we can get together but as time passed it got much harder and now martial arts training is almost non-existence.
However, it still comes down to priorities and same person in my situation still could make it work. They may have to sacrifice few other things I'm sure but it's possible. Just not possible for me at the moment with the new born son and a job that requires a lot of travels and long hours.
I work a full time job and run a mixed martial arts school. My normal routine is wake up early 5:00 am do 45 - 60 mins on the eliptical take wey protien and vitamins. That gives me 25 mins to shower get ready and leave for work. Work from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Leave get to my gym by 6:00pm. From 6:00 - 6:30 I stertch take my supliments and watch my junior instructors finish teaching the kids class. From 6:30 - 8:30 train with my guys go through all drills and excercises with them work on technique and spar. From 8:30 - 9:15 lift weights one body part per day, after that drive home and shower. From 9:30-11:00 eat sensible dinner hang out with the girlfriend(she gets me all weekend so we're cool) I have a great staff of coaches so if I need to take a day off I can.
It does get difficult alot of days I'm to tired to think sometimes but, I love training so much I suck it up and get through. I think I posted my schedule in another thread but, I don't remember. If you like I can post it again to give you an idea.

Nice, but sounds like your gonna do long term damage to your body, how long have you been keeping that up for?
Eh, no more damage than any other athelete. Training to compete and training just to improve are two different intensity levels. If you are ok with being embarrassed by someone that actually puts in the time and effort then so be it, some people cant stand losing. And I dont mean that as you being you, but you being people.
Anyway I work a full time job. And the last few months have been hard, I've been slacking for sure. But I'm moving this weekend. Hooray!!!
I'll be within a few minutes walking distance of my gym and my dojo, theyre right beside each other. So thats going to be awesome.
I start the mornings with a few miles on the treadmill. Then I either hit the bags to work on my power, ladder drills/soccerball drills for foot speed, forms, or somtimes a circuit of all three.
Then its off to work 7:30 to 4:30. MWF I hit the treadmill on my lunch break. Thats the beauty of running a good pace, if you run fast enough you can get a lot of mileage in a little bit of time.
Afterwork I lift, you dont want to see my routine its a bit crazy but if anyone remembers Spinach he was the one that set me up. So I lift and do abs, because the core is what makes kicks strong not necessarily your legs.
After all of that I do submission grappling on Mon and Thurs. I do Ninjutsu on Tues, Thurs, and Sat. I do Tae Kwon Do on Wed, Fri, and Sat.

Even the best of men are capable of the most disgusting evil. Just as the most evil man is capable of showing kindness.
Do not be fooled into thinking your enemy's sin is worse than yours, or that your's is better than his.

I've been doing it for about 2 years now. I'm 32 so pretty soon I'll slow down a bit. I'm aiming to drop back down to my natural walk weight of 190lbs by the fall. I'm thinking of fighting again a few more times. It hasn't been that hard on my body but, if I don't keep up with my vitamins and supplements I think my body would suffer. I appreciate your concern though

Wow...I couldn't immagine waking up and doing all that for a work out. Whew! I get tired just thinking about it! Of course, I don't go to bed until around midnight either, so I don't get up early enough to do stuff like that before I go to work. I don't mind doing a workout like that in the afternoon, but not in the morning. Of course, I'm 37 now...Not exactly a spring chicken, but not an old rooster either. I still take on all the young uns in the dojo....but they're closing one me quickly.
I actually have 4 different "jobs" I am doing right now.
IT Consulting: I am working on an IT contract for a government contract. That job is Mon-Fri 9-6
Black Belt Academy: I teach a Submission Grappling program for this school. Classes are Mon & Wed 8:30pm-10:00pm and Saturday 3:00pm-4:30pm
Yamasaki Woodbridge: This is "my" school in Woodbridge, VA. That is Tuesday and Thursday 7:00pm-8:30pm.
Bad Ass Coffee Co of NoVA: I am doing all these other jobs to help fund a franchise coffee shop I am trying to open. This all gets done in the spare time I have.

Glad to see some dedicated and hardworking people on this forum. I guess I don't feel so bad about my schedule compared to some of you guys. Still, I would like to get back into regular training as soon as possible - even if it's only 45min a day.
Yeah, I constantly feel as if Id like to train more.
I work between 40 and 50 hours a week doing graphic design and freelance work. I try to attend 3-4 TKD classes a week, and maintain a healthy social life, but damn, I always feel as if something is being neglected.
I would love to have a 28 hour day.
I sappose that is the complaint of any active young adult.
