MTV2's "The Final Fu" pits 30 fighters from various martial arts disciplines against each other combining challenges and semi contact point fighting, designed to find out who has the ultimate martial arts skills. The fighter with the highest total points scored at the end of the final week of the series wins the competition, becoming The Final Fu. The host of the show is actor and martial arts superstar, Ernie Reyes Jr. ("The Rundown," "The Last Dragon," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and "Red Sonja"). Check it out weekdays at 7:30pm on MTV2!!
I watched an episode tonight. It kind of looks like they were copying the SpikeTV's Ultimate Fighter little bit. I wasn't impressed with the skills of the contestants. If they let a guy fight a girl point for point, it already says a lot.
In terms of finding a great martial arts action hero from contest? Not promising. In terms of entertainment value, I think it's a step forward for martial arts in general to be promoted more and more.
I was more surprised by seeing how mature Ernie Reyes, Jr. is. Hard to believe it's the same kid that was in Last Dragon. Now, he's the eldersman and all the contestants were the young rookies starting to make it in the show business.
I finally watched an episode last night. It looks like good test of skills - punching, kicking, rolls, etc. The sparring looks so boring after watching UFC fights.
I caught an episode last night and I was mildly entertained. A nice concept for a show, but I think it may be missing something. It just seems to jump from one thing to another. I guess they are trying NOT to be like the Ultimate Fighter reality show and just show us the challenges, but for some reason it just feels too chopped up. No real flow to the show itself.
I do agree with an earlier post, Reyes Jr. does a nice job in his role. The sparring last night was pretty good, about what I would expect with the rules they have in place. Some pretty talented martial artists on the show. I'm sure that if I continue to watch it that the show will grow on me. It's not bad - just not what we are used to I guess. Great show for martial arts awareness, though.
OK, since MTV and MTV2 have nothing better to do than replay all of their shows over and over all weekend, I had a chance to watch a couple more episodes and I think I like this show. I'm a little disappointed in some of the contestants' attitudes - much too cocky for what I thought a martial artist was supposed to be. But with that said, they so far seem to be very good martial artists - all with something to offer. A very good group in the first week. The rules are a little strange with the points and everything for the challenge, but it is TV and I guess you have to make winners and losers. I'm very interested to see the shows next week to see how this progresses.
I watched a few more episode and it's ..... OK. I would give it a B-. Good concept. Few decent martial artists. Challenging courses. And little drama among contestants. Not a great prize at $25,000.
Although there are many styles of martial arts, I think that Tae Kwon Do is the one that is most commonly taught. I don't know whay that is, but if you look in the phone book here you will find 4 TKD schools for every 1 of all the other martial arts schools.
