Holy cow! Look, the guy needs to stop barehanding the trees. You've got to have some kind of cover on your hands if you're going to do that. He needs to stick to something safer. You should try going beyond your limits, but not to where to you wasted time.

Some take training to the extreme. In a regular social order, it is too much.

If fighting for a living and per the body parts that will warrant the fight method, it may be a necessary.

I've heard some of them surgically remove the nerves of certain body parts not to feel the pain.

There is a famous chinese kung fu master (I forgot the name) who punches brick like 1000 times a day and I've seen the picture of his knuckles and they are ugly and huge.

Again, these are extreme cases.

unfortunately I haven't read the whole thread sorry. I will try to answer the original post.

as students I think we can only even justify a means to an endif this is how he feels he will improve then only he can be sure this is a good way of training.

People are not solid objects they are not like trees and I only ever intend on hitting people so I train to hit people.

I know very little, but personally I would not be prepared to hit trees, when a punch bag will suffice, but this may be my own weakness, your friend is obviously determined which is a very positive thing.

I hope that your friend does not hurt himself training this way, but we only ever learn from our own experience.

thankyou for reading, have a good new year's
