MMA = Mixed Martial Arts, which more then implies its a hybred system of various MAs without actually being systemized into a "new system." For example, what I do can be considered MMA because I draw techniques, ideas and concepts from other MAs that suit my needs. But, I don't call it an MMA since my goal is self-defense and combatives...

If you disagree with what i said, thats fine and your choice. But my opinion is that MMA is not a style.

KickBoxing is what you would call a MMA - Mixed Martial Art

In my experiences, the technique differences between traditional karate and sport karate are pretty big. I started out in martial arts taking sport karate (based on shotokan, but certainly kickboxing) and learned how to spar for points (just like boxing or continuous sparring in some tournaments). When I started taking seishin juku in Japan, the techniques I had learned before were pretty much useless. In seishin juku and kyokushin we stayed away from spinning kicks and high kicks, and we kicked and punched A LOT harder. However, this is just one person's experience, so other styles could differ.

How so? American Kick Boxing came from Karate. In fact it was first known as free style karate before the use of the words kick boxing. Muay Thai is its own system.
