Technically there is no difference. The cross historically got is name as a right counter punch that crossed over the opponents left jab, hence the cross. The straight is actually the straight right or the straight left (jab) since both punches come straight from the arm, this is also why there is a difference in the judges jab which travels upward, think Ali. Most boxing coaches will use the term cross to denote a 2 or straight right hand since straight can technically apply to both arms. It's probably also why we switched over to the number system it's just easier.

I'm begging my coach to put me in an ametuer fight, he knows I'm not ready so he still says no. He is right to do so, but I just feel I would train harder if I was getting one. Sorry to go off topic, but got any advice?

Then that should be your motivation. Get your butt in the gym and bust your ass on the matts and make it happen. Prove to yourself and your coach that you're willing to step up for this.
Exactly what Tri said man...if you want to fight, you gotta work for it. Maybe set a goal for yourself, if that helps. You've already been training for a while. Maybe put in 3-6 hard months of training to prove that you really want it, and then see what your coach says?
