Other than black?
Does anyone know where to get ninja outfits in more colours than black? I'm looking for stuff like browns, grays, greens, and blues.
If not, I had an idea of getting a white one and dying it. Does anyone have any experience with that? If not then I guess I'll be a first.
If I do dye one, I'd use natural dyes. I think I'd make a brown one first using used coffee grounds as it is the easiest thing I can acquire for use as a natural dye.
Any help or input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Black isn't really a good colour for being in the dark, that's why they don't use woodland camo in the military anymore (I grew up with the military, my dad's retired USAF and we've lived with USMC, Army, and Navy people) Black cuts out your shape in the dark, and is easily identifiable with NVGs.
Black is used for ninja costumes because of the kabuki theater where stage handlers would wear it and so would the ninja actors so the audience couldn't tell the difference from the two until the actor did his part in order to hold the disguise. According to my research, ninjas wore dark browns, grays, greens and reds depending on their surroundings.
I wouldn't bother with trying to use a 'natural dye'. Real dyes are cheap and easy to find. I have had some good experience using RIT brand fabric dyes with all manner of items.

Rit dyes are pretty good, I've used them before. Their black dye is not too good and ends up purple.
Natural brown is easy for me, my uncle and grandma drink a ton of coffee so I have no problem getting that. Plus I'm kind of an environmentalist and try to use as much natural and organic stuff as possible. Also I like the challenge of making things myself.

yeah thats correct. black can be used but colors like navy blue or even dark red in some instances is better.
most modern ninjutsu schools wear black gis an uniforms cause that just happens to be the uniform of choice. but we also wear blue, gray an many other colors as well as other clothing.
historically whichever color was blended well with the enviroment was used. so white would be effective in snowy climates. just using black uniforms is Japanese Popular media and Western misinterpretation
i got some decent links for other colors of uniforms like white, woodland, camoflauge etc.
they issue us "ninja" brand uniforms similar to these in the army too depending on where your stationed at that u can order from the civilian contracter site that supplies the army that have
the green and brownish color patterns that blend in with those enviroments. when i get back from work ill dig through my insane bookmark log for the links

Ninja Outfits... hmm if I were to run a bodyguard/assassin/delivery program I wouldn't have them walking around in black outfits... they'd be dressed like civilians.

BerzerkerBear,
To answer your question; yes there are white and camouflaged uniforms available. As for the issue of the Black gi; natural black dyes (wallnuts for example) produce a flat black the shiny raven black is effectively a synthetic thing. Personally I think a black gi has to washed 10 to 15 times before it produces a nice flat black/charcoal/slate type of color.
Historically the black gi was a costume of kabuki stage handles, but as shinobi pointed out many were a deep red which stands out in normal light but in low light conditions becomes a deep brown in tone and color. And yes you can find camouflaged shinobi-gis and white gis ones as well. Remember there is no such thing as a shionobi gi; a dogi (gi) is just a modernization of a kimono which means they can/should be any color. Its just a matter of matching cloths with enviornment...

Mostly for fun, but I'd really like to start learning stealth stuff too(I know there's more to ninjitsu than being sneaky). The closest ninjitsu school is like 5 hours away from where I live so that's not really something I can do right now. Learning on my own, though not the best way is better than not learning at all. Trial and error is how it was originally done anyways. If any of my friends are willing I'd like to have them try to pick me out of hiding and see if I can sneak up/past them.
