Interesting series of videos. I haven't watched them all because I don't have the time right now, but this guy seems to be saying what I've always believed. That ninjutsu never was a martial art, as we define martial arts in the modern age.

What I mean is that, in feudal Japan when the ninja were relevant, it was practiced as a system of espionage, not a system of fighting.

From what I've read and gathered my own opinion about Ninjas.. Was that they were like an Elite team that practiced and studied ways to assasinate/sabotage anything or whoever they were ordered to. I don't think it was considered an art form cause of very few people were selected to be in the elite team. But of course that was then... Now we have a lot more people teaching it all around the world. I use to consider the Ninja like the Seals of ancient time.

I find it interesting that Many, many countries have espionage soldiers like the ninja, but due to hollywood and some individuals self-promotion, you'd think the ninja were the only such units that ever exsisted.

Tri, that is just funny

ninjutsu is like an umbrella term. its a combination of jujutsu, taijutsu, weapons classical and modern etc.

the espionage/ spy skillset is a small part of ninjutsu but this got misconstrued by popular media an came the stereotype that ninjutsu is only about espionage and spying an assassination.

but all these skills are collectively ninjutsu and ninjutsu falls under Bujutsu which is "old way" or old style martial arts/science.

both Samurai and Ninja are also interelated and they practiced some of the same combat skill sets and both did espionage but hollywood overlooks that too.

ninja had different jobs some were spies and all they did was spy. some wore the same armor as Samurai and fought on the battlefield alongside Samurai and thats all they did.

some engaged in guerilla warfare and depending on what clan they from an what the assignment was they wore different types of clothing and armor to suit the situation.

I've got some holidays coming up (YAY!), so if you could recommend any books on this topic, I'll try to get my hands on them. It would be interesting to know more about this.

various sources in addition to school curriculum. some historical references are Bansenshukai, Ninpiden ,and Shoninki

these are texts from Edo- era that have early historical content on ninja operations and weapons used.

the Bugei Ryuha Daijiten or martial arts encyclopedia is also a source that in addition to old and modern martial arts also contains the hand to hand combat styles used in ninjutsu

with the names of the menkyo kaiden or license holders and thier successors going back hundreds of years.

The guy in the videos went to Japan to find out more about the Ninja and the only scrolls that are actually available to see are from 1618 and they are Shoninki, Ninpiden and the Bansenshukai. He has also found 100 ninja poems and Gunpo (a war manual) and all of these do NOT mention martial arts at all...
