From many boxers, the upper cut is a secondary and launched from a bob/weave position.
However, other boxers use it as a primary to lift the opponents head in order to set up or follow through with a hook/cross.
The uppercut, per its mechanics is "hardly" different from a palm strike to the same target-under the chin.
Striking the chin in such a fashion can cause paralysis, mild concussion, and unconsciousness. The jawbone acts as a lever that can transmit the force of a blow to the back of the brain where the cardiac and respiratory mechanisms are controlled.
The action upon the chin, forces the head to snap back, causes pressure in certain areas of the posterior neck. Such pressure on the cervical vertebrae. Some would constitute this as whiplash, but the defining action of whiplash has no force upon the head, such as a strike to the head in any manner.
(Whiplash- The head, with no force acting upon it, remains static in space, resulting in forced extension of the neck as the shoulders travel anteriorly under the head. Following extension, the inertia of the head is overcome, and it is also accelerated forward. The neck then acts as a lever to increase the forward acceleration of the head and force the neck into flexion.)
What is your view on the tactic?

Me personally use the uppercut at least once every fight (When boxing) but that doesn't mean it always hits. The face is much longer than wide, meaning there's more chance of a hit from the side.

Its the classic trade off. If you hit, it can hurt. If you miss, you are open to get killed. So, make it count.
The chin acts like a trigger, it rocks the jaw and snaps the head back, (jawbone acts as a lever that can transmit the force of a blow to the back of the brain where the cardiac and respiratory mechanisms are controlled.)

Indeed, it one of those things that timing is everything....
On time, on mark, a effective and clean shot.....

Reason: back to back posts
This reminds me of a quote from "Big Joe" (Kelly's Heroes)....
Something like...
"That means Mulligan has to be on time and on target and he ain't never been neither!!" - Big Joe (Telly Savalas in Kelley's Heroes)
One of the bad things on the uppercut when being so close, if the arms cannot function to commit, the fighter pops up the head and can get away with a head butt.

Can cause paralysis or has caused paralysis? Is that theoretical as in it could happen or has it been recorded as actually happening to someone?
I mean since your head is connected to your neck...snapping it to quickly and powerfully could cause paralysis. Just curious.
Call me cynical but I believe that if someone can die some way someone has died that way. I mean the warning on the chainsaw "Do not stop blade with hands or genitals" got there for a reason.

You started the post and included a statement that said that it could cause paralysis. Then you said maybe. That was what I was questioning.
As to what I think, I suppose it would be possible, however, what I THINK is unimportant compared to the truth. For example, I can think I am immortal, but that does not make it true. In the same way, you made a statement and presented it as fact, then went back and questioned it. What it up with that?
