Savate?

Sorry about the long leave that I took. My wife and I took a little vacation to France for 2 1/2 weeks. While I was there I was able to find a small local martial arts school in the town we stayed in. They taught savate, and that was the first time I was actually able to see this style in action and I have to say that it seemed pretty effective. I invited the instructor to a small tournament that is being held in Macon Georgia on August 25, for instructors of all forms and styles.

Here is a little info on Savate:

Savate takes its name from the French for old boot (heavy footwear that used to be worn during fights). The modern formalized form is mainly an amalgam of French street fighting techniques from the beginning of the 19th century[1]. Savate was then a type of street fighting common in Paris and northern France. In the south, especially in the port of Marseille, sailors developed a fighting style involving high kicks and open-handed slaps. It is conjectured that the kicks were done so as to allow the kicker to use a free hand for balance on a rocking ship's deck, and that the kicks and slaps were used on land to avoid the legal penalties for using a closed fist, which was considered a deadly weapon under the law. It was known as jeu marseillais (game from Marseille), and was later renamed chausson (slipper, after the type of shoes the sailors wore). In contrast, at this time in England (the home of boxing and the Queensberry rules), kicking was seen as unsportsmanlike.

Many martial arts provide ranking systems, such as belt colors. Savate uses glove colors to indicate a fighter's level of proficiency. (Unlike arts such as karate, which assign new belts at each promotion, however, moving to a higher color rank in savate does not necessarily entail a change in the color of one's actual gloves, and a given fighter may continue using the same pair of gloves through multiple promotions.) Novices begin at no color. Promotion tests allow the fighter to graduate successively to blue, green, red, white and yellow. Competition is restricted to yellow glove rank and above, fighters at white glove rank are considered to be instructors in training, and yellow gloves are required to teach what they know to others and can attend a combat competition. Silver gloves are the highest regular rank in savate. White gloves and lower ranks can be attributed by the teacher but for the higher ranks, the fighter must take a real exam.

I noticed from what Claude taught that his style of Savate, is about 75% feet and only 25% hands. He used a lot of snap, hook, spinning, and jump kicks with a few close fisted punches. His style seemed to centered around offensive attacks and very few defensive techniques.

I heard of it long ago when I purchased a "fresh printed" book on it from a author named Bruce Tegner.

I would have enjoyed seeing it in action in such a marvelous country.

I wish I could take such a vacation...

Well, we were actually very lucky to be able to take this trip. One of my students who I have been teaching for close to 5 years now, came up to me and asked if he would be able to teaching, or help me teach in a few classes. So, I let him teach a few class under my supervision for about a week. After seeing that he would do just fine for a short period my wife and I decided to take this trip.

It was great to be able to see a new martial art that I have never encountered before. I just hope I will get the chance to compete against another martial artists who uses this style.

Savate is a great martial art. Though one problem in France is that, in order to increase public appreciation of the art, it has become a sport with in a similar way to Tkd. Alot of the defensive and street fighting techniques and tacics were lost. There are still old savate practitioners but that are in the provences away from the big cities and mainstream practitioners.

The school in my city is founded by a french savate professer teaching all the styles of savate. The knowledge found in my little city is quite huge and Bridgeman Savate now has international recognition. The main instructors have now gone to Paris numerous times to teach the Parisians their own syllabus!
http://www.bridgemansavate.com/ This is the mainsite and this is a page about there trips to france. There is some good info on that page about the different styles. http://www.bridgemansavate.com/A2sojourn.html

If you want to learn a bit about Savate this is a good place to start.

I should say though that even the sports style is pretty hard. There is a dominant record in their favour in inter style fights. Muay thai in particular doesn`t have a good record against them. That isn`t a go at Muay thai practitioners out there by the way. I do Muay thai frequently and love it. Its usefull when I`m not wearing shoes..

This is an ok fight I found on youtube. Not great though, I don`t think the savatuer is particularly good but it gives people an indication.

Savate trains alive and full contact like muay thai does.....krav maga tends to train soft and compliant.

welcome back Yukimura. i have an old issue of BB magazine from 94 or 95 where i first learned about Savate. some of the techniques came from French sailors who picked up some moves and lessons during thier deployments to the East
