Silat is the same for all style of it, only the difference is the name and stances. INdonesia, Phillipine, Malaysia, Thailand share the same Silat..

But there is certain secret that carried by each style and secret only can be learn if the student perfect enough the learn it.

Just use caution and research the art and the instructors....

Researching the art would have you prepared to what to ecpect.

Researching instructors will haveyou realise the credentials and expereince

I personally don't know much about it.....But a member on my website is from Indonesia, she posted there that she studied Pencak Silat for well, here is a quote:

"Let's share our opinion about our Tradisional Martial Art, Pencak Silat. Actually, my first martial art is Pencak Silat. I learned it when i was on the 3rd grade of elementry until 6th grade..On the begining on the 6th grade of elementary, i quited to concentrate my self on the final graduation exam..

Pencak Silat has many art just like poomsae, but it uses Indonesian Tradisional Music as the Backsound. It also use many weapon sush as pole, kujang(Indonesian Sword, comes from Sundanese Culture), keris (Indonesian Sword, comes from Javanese Culture), sword, even a fan."

Please keep in mind English is NOT her first language.
The Art sounds VERY Interesting though.

Kali is attacking with knives
Silat is defending against knives

Kali is a knife and stick fighting art from the Phillipines with both defence and offence. Silat is a term (like kung fu) used to denote a large group of malay fighting arts and depending on what you study you can get all sorts of weapon training (I originally learnt to use sai from a silat instructor though obviously under a different name). A silat practitioner fought in the the early UFC series.

Recon I could do with some discipline all round so martial arts seems like a good place to look, also I want to be able to defend myself and have confidence walking from the bus stop or getting hastle in a club, not that Im violent but being able to give people enough of a fright to not want to find out how far I'll go would be nice, you know?

I was just watching some Silat on youtube, I dont know if its more the posts that are popular but it seems very brutal and then a mixture of dancing. It looks good for a little woman like me

If you like Silat then go for it. Just remember though that Silat encaspulates many styles with considerable variance. So if you find a Silat style you don't like, remember that there are other Silat styles that offer something completely different and maybe something you will like.
