Really..? :o ehmm...Silat is the Malay traditional martial arts that exist in the world for a long ages ago. Its move covered by the dance and a lots of people say that the dance is only the dance. But the truth is, it is the style of tricks to defeat the enemy because they willl not know where the Silat practioner will move after this.

If capoiera has their style of dance in their martial arts, there is also for the Silat. To know the Silat in deep meaning someone need to learn it from a Master so that the person can study and feel the arts talk about...

Maybe Silat is not as famous as taekwondo but nowadays, in America, UK, Germany, Philipines and other countries have their own Silat master. It is prove when the World Silatr Championship that was held in Singapore in 2004 if I not mistaken, a lots of western countries come join is Silat festival..

We now in Malaysia start to spread Silat to share with all the world community so that we can now the culture among each other. Not just in Malaysia, the World Silat federation (PERSILAT) has now do a lots of event so that the world know Silat.

Emm...do you ever known about Hang Tuah?

Never heard of Silat... I read the description and still can't really picture it. I will/would Google it...later.

Is it comparable to other better-known styles?

Thumbs down

Hang Tuah is one of the Malay warrior that have braveness, skillful in Silat long time ago. He was the massanger of the Malay Royal to the China and meet the emperor of China to negotiate about the relationship with the China in alots of aspect such as economics. He the one who defeated the Taming Sari, the most skillful and powerful warrior from Javanese, then he got the Taming Sari Keris. Keris is the Malay royal traditonal weapon that look likes a knife but has unique shape.

As a view, the Silat warrior@ practioner wears the black clothes, just the same as ninja uniform but Silat warrior wears additional wearings like Tanjak (looks like a cap on the head), Sampin (that be banded at the lower body start from lower back to knee), and brings with the Keris.

Silat moves with seven combination of powers, and there are softness, hardness, perfection, toughness, speeds, sharpness, and movements itself. In Chinese martial arts discipline they called Ying Yang. You ever heard its rite?

For the question --> "Is it comparable to other better-known styles?", every martial arts in the world have their own style. For me, it is depend on the person himself who learn the martial arts and how he really have the spirit in the martial arts he has. The most important thing is how do he trains, and how he control himself to not create the chaos. That the true martial arts heart. We cannot say that JKD, Muay Thai, Kungfu, Taekwondo, Silat or any other martial is better then the other. To know the real truth about a particular martial art, learn it from a Master but not decides to get into a martial arts in because some people say the martial art is better. Better for some people, but maybe not for us. The path of learning is still need a long journey to travel. Ehmmm..that's my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanx....

Here is the definition of Silat from Wikipedia.

Pencak Silat or Silat ("fighting by using techniques of self-defence") is a Southeast Asian martial art with roots in the culture of the Malay World. This art is widely known in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore but can also be found in varying degrees among the Malay-affiliated countries of Thailand and the Philippines. The art has also reached Europe, and is especially popular in the Netherlands, where it is as popular as karate is in the United States. It is estimated that there are hundreds of aliran (styles) and thousands of schools. Many of the aliran find their origin in the observation of wild animals fighting. "Harimau" (Tiger) and "Elang" (Eagle) are some examples.
There are four main aspects to pencak silat:
  1. The "Mental-Spiritual" aspect: Pencak silat aims to build and develop personality and noble character.
  2. The "Bela Diri" (self-defence) aspect: Self-confidence and perseverance are very important.
  3. The "Seni Budaya" (culture, art) aspect: Culture and performing the "art" of pencak silat is very important. This combines Pencak Silat with traditional music and costumes.
  4. The "Olahraga" (sport) aspect: This means that the physical aspect of pencak silat is important. We try to have a sound mind in a sound body. Competitions are part of this aspect. There are full-contact (Pertandingan=Competition) fights, as well as form demonstrations, for one (Tunggal), two (Ganda) or team (Regu) persons.
The styles and schools of pencak silat differ from each other with regard to which aspects are emphasised. It is thanks to the sport and self-defence aspects that this sport has become popular in Europe. However, many believe the essence of Pencak Silat is lost, or watered down, when converted to a sport and therefore still focus on traditional or spiritual forms of Silat, not strictly following the PERSILAT way.
Pencak Silat is a system that consists of sikap-sikap (positions) and gerak-geri (movements). When pesilat (silat practitioners) are moving (when fighting) these sikap and gerak-geri change continuously. As soon as one finds an opening in their opponent's defence, they will try to finish the opponent with a fast serangan (attack).
Pencak Silat has a wide variety of defence and attacking techniques. Practitioners may use hands, elbows, arms, legs, knees and feet in attacks. Common techniques include kicking, hitting, tripping, sweeps, locks, takedowns, throws, strangles, and joint breaking.
The pesilat, or silat practitioner, practices with jurus. A jurus is a series of meta-movements for the upper body used as a guide to learn the applications, or buah when done with a partner. The use of langkah (steps), or lower body meta movements teach the use of footwork. When combined, it is dasar pasang, or whole body flow.
Pencak Silat has developed rapidly during the 20th century and has become a competition sport under the PERSILAT rules and regulations. At the moment Pencak Silat is being promoted by PERSILAT in several countries on all five continents. The goal of PERSILAT is to make Pencak Silat an olympic sport. Apart from the official PERSILAT line of making Pencak Silat a competition sport, there are still many traditional styles practising old forms of Silek and Silat.
PERSILAT (Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antarabangsa, the International Pencak Silat Federation) is promoting Pencak Silat as an international competition sport. Only members recognised by PERSILAT are allowed to participate at international competitions.
At the moment some European national Pencak Silat federations together with PERSILAT have founded a European Pencak Silat Federation.
In 1986 the first Pencak Silat World Championship outside of Asia took place in Vienna, Austria.
In 2002 Pencak Silat was introduced as part of the exhibition programme at the Asian Games in Busan Korea for the first time.
The last World Championships 2002 took place in Penang, Malaysia in December 2002.
Bersilat is the word given to the act of doing silat.

Actually silat has no particular name, just known as Silat ages ago. The malay land fill with soil land, hills and other condition made Silat has a lot of school. Some have low stand and some have high stand. Some tells that Silat at the early stage separated into two style that are hand style and leg style. The combination of two style also contribute a lot on existance of different school.

Also ages ago, Silat don't some sort of dojo or something like gym. Just learn on house. Silat been taught secretively to those who are really wanna to learn it to the right way.
