Fencing

Anyone please explain to me how fencing is part of martial arts. I didn't know that it was. It's kind of intriging to know of such a sport being a part of the martial arts world. Give me feedback.

it is a western martial art. martial arts are anything that is a combat art..... the art part is hard to define and gets tricky, i consider the definition as a coordinated system. thus fencing is a martial art

We also discuss kendo (which is just as much of a sport as fencing), karate and TKD tournaments, and MMA tournaments. All of these are sports, too. They are all based on types of fighting. This is why they fit in here.

As far as it fitting "art" there are many different definitions, and it fits more than a couple. While I think that kendo and fencing have become more science than art, the art is still there, especially if practitioners are periodically willing to go by rules of play from different eras (where you aren't limited to a particular line, or don't have to hit the torso only, or can include unarmed techniques such as trips, shoves).

I did a bit of fencing at school, and i really loved it - it teaches you speed, range and helps you look for weaknesses in an opponents defence and feint weaknesses of your own so you can manipulate an opponents attack and counter.

And you get to play with swords

I found fencing very good for fitness, hand-eye coordination, and tactics... I did, however, find it a bit restrictive with regards to fighting (you can run out of space quite quickly on a 14m by 2m strip!)
Sabre was a good technique to learn though as the entire body is a target as opposed to just the torso.
It has all the fundamentals of a martial art: etiquette, concentration, fighting, fitness and flexibility and is good fun to learn. It taught me a lot about fighting!
