An Advanced Directive, is an over-lining factor that governs everything within a certain area of experience and expertise. This mental modification is why and how the SOC (Special Operations Command) guys teach their art.
In relation to hand-to-hand combatives and even grand scale invasion forces, this over lapping principle is called the "Advanced Directive." The core of this directive is 2 points;
1- Keep It Simple
2- Keep It Effective
As pathetically simple as it sounds, its not. Because for the sake of simple and effective, you must combine the "basic skills" with "advanced knowledge" in one stage of learning. Then you must research other martial arts, self-defense and combatives systems to compile a basic system of fundamental techniques and principles. Then you need a way to teach these fundamentals to others, in an effective way.
In teaching a single punch, one must address the mechanics, physics and princples behind that punch. And then demonstrate a variation of said punch, example would be an upper-cut and a rising palm strike. Same mechanic, slightly different muscles used, and different striking surface. Same basic technique.
Applying this basic application of an Advanced Directive and in fact teaching the advanced directive to others as they learn said combatives results in teaching students to quickly diasect and apply any martial arts they come across.
The Advanced Directive, is how and why the SOC guys have been able to strip down first Judo, then Karate and apply assets of Kung-fu (namely Wing Chun being the most well known). Several former military men tried applying this concept without fully understanding it and have botch up the origional intent. And resulted in bastardized Martial Arts, and combinations of Martial Arts that are a mixing of techniques but not applied methods of prinicple.
On a side note, this Advanced Directive has also lead to the "spider web" effect of learning for SOC groups. Each member seems to learn other martial arts, apply the Advanced Directive and come back to teach his team members. Use creating a "spider web" of MA cross training.
I learned this from one of my bar owner friends who was in SF during the Vetenam war. One thing about WV we have the highest enlistment rate of all 50 states and by population are one of the smallest states in union. Plenty of vets, martial artists and so on to learn from
