Other Martial ArtsDiscuss other martial arts here - such as Capoeira, Savate, Fencing, and Western Martial Arts, etc.
Id have to agree with everyone here pretty much.
Good for martial arts but not for actual combat
Good flexability, strength, coordination
But I would never do a flip or cart wheel on the street. Even the BJJ clip (i didnt see it but I think I know what your talking about and have seen it before) might work in a BJJ match but not in a fight. So...again...martial arts good. combat bad.

The person would have to have one heck of an honour code not to take advantage of that opening.Movies don't take into
account the fact that someone could use the dirty tactic of
hitting your back.(Or in some cases stabbing you in the back.)
The are some exceptions I'm sure, but generally they would be like those unrealistic 540's or 1,200's,or even 360's.Probably more like a roundhouse kick.
Maybe if you could could counter a slice,by blocking with your knife, then beforming a roundhouse kick then lunging at them with a dagger. But the likely hood of that being successful is slim.

I can see where a type of flip could be useful it some catches your foot with a kicking attempt...provided certain details are met.

I just wonder what the odds are.I meen for example
if bruce lee did that, yea it might work, but if it were
me the chances are greater that I would not exceed.

As I said, certain details/criteria have to be met.
And, there are a lot of easier, safer ways to counter when your foot is caught...

Back flipping is not done because people are afraid to practice in in fear of landing on their head. they dont realise with proper instruction, that momentum keeps the head, the least part of the body from hitting. I had a Rusian gymnast coach whom taught me how.....
* Does the opponent have too tight a grip on the foot.
I had seed someoe catch a foot, and the person tried to flip off...pbly to sprain his own ankle because it wouldnt dislodge. Even though his opposire free leg/foot, made contact woth the grabber's head.
*Is there enough space/room to execut the backflip.
I had seen another person trying to do a backlip but wasn't cognizant of his surroundings. He landed into a chair and broke is leg.
* Are there alternatives.
There are other ways to escape a foot grab.
We have practices and devices to help us get out of a foot grab.

In reply to Little Dragon's question: gymnastics are the only thing relevant to Martial arts. The hierarchy goes like this:
1. Punch
2. Kick
3. Side flip
4. Front roll
5. Back/frontflip
6. Throwing
7. Good pommel-horse routine (for balance, center, and strength, not just as a pommel-horse routine
8. Cartwheels
9. Sommersaults
10. Grappling
