Gymnastics is great for conditioning your body. Also, a gymnist would have no problem with rolls and falls.
A real fight is very quick and brutal. To start doing gymnastics in the middle of one seems very ill advised. If you do fancy flips and spins then you turn your back on your enemy, as has been stated. You also lose you ability to change direction to avoid or take advantage of your opponent. Once your body starts travelling in the direction of your flips or spins, due to physics, that's the direction you will go until your gymnastics are completed or someone knocks you out of the air. In a fight you gotta do everything you can to stack the deck in your favor. By trying to look cool or pretty you are giving your enemy more than a few cards outta your deck. Doesn't make since to do that when your health is on the line.
The comment that it would be good for martial arts, but not good in fighting kinda confuses me. Martial arts is the study of fight science. If something doesn't fit within the rules of that science then it is not good martial arts. That doesn't mean its worthless or cannot help you in some way, but it is not martial arts.
I believe it to be relevant in alot of martial arts, especially their high kicking displays and high board breaking, in for instance taekwondo, which would be alot easier to do if you were a gymnast.

Its my opinion that high kicking displays and high board breaking isn't real martial arts training. When would you use something like that to really defend yourself?...ok maybe if a member of the NBA attacked you. Does it show skill and physical prowess? Heck yeah! I find it fun to watch myself. However, kicks that high, leaving yourself exposed that badly, is not martially sound. I realize this may sound like a knock on TKD and its not. I've met some TKD players that are very good at martial arts and fighting.
Like many physical activities, gymnastics can help you enhance your body giving you another tool for your martial arts. Gymnastics are NOT martial arts though and using gymnastics when you should be using your martial arts skill is an invitation to injury.
Indeed...Like I said, I would never use them in a fight.

Gymnastics are awsome when combined with MA. There is a great movie about a gymnist who combined the power of Karate with gymnastics called Gymkata. Here's the trailer: YouTube - Gymkata movie trailer

This were I will mention that Sonny Chiba was a gymnast before he did karate. Plus gymnastic allows you to move around your enviroment easily. Like if you get in a fight and there are a pair of parallel bars nest to you you can use them to your advantage.

You do realize that the star in that was a gymnist, not a martial artist? It was also a bad movie with bad fight choreography. Also, movies are NOT martial arts.

Indeed, wires and SFX can make anyone a martial art star nowadays.

Hey, my post count has the same palaverment tone as anyone elses'
They do not compliment each other, from my opinion, as I had studied both.
I've heard of a lady (through my TSD instructor) who trains in gymnastics and Jujitsu. Apparently she's very difficult to throw since whatever you do to her she just lands back on her feet.
I can't prove this of course, but it's just something I've heard.

which throw?
i doubt it. it is pretty much impossible to land on your feet from any throw, and if you did it would put extreme tensions on your legs.also almost impossible since while your being thrown your still being held.
the move in the video is one of the few which you can land on your feet. anyone can do it.
i think gymnastics can help your martial arts like any other hobby can, like football, or track etc.
