We box with 16 oz. gloves. No one wants to wear head gear because is is cumbersome, it slips, impedes vision, makes you hot - yada, yada, yada. I was boxing a few nights ago with some 20 yr. old beginners. I got wacked in the side of my left eye & it started to close. I went to my grandson's basketball game with an ice pack on my eye (filled a plastic bag with snow - it works a charm).
A friend of mine said I was crazy for not wearing head gear. I always felt that the 16 oz. gloves had enough padding. Maybe I'm just too old to be doing this. I need some opinions/constructive criticism or just some experienced advice.
Again gloves do not protect the person being hit, they protect the person doing the hitting even 16 oz gloves. Buy a good piece of head gear I prefer Title or Fairtex but I also have a mexican style from century that isn't bad. Don't use those foam dipped pieces of crap spend a little more and your head gear will be awesome.

I gotta support what Tri said. Foam = crap. Good head gear can save some wear on the ole noggin. Some of us are already worn enough, huh Tom?
Yeah, I never got why TKD competitions force us to use those foam things. Your brain still gets rocked to hell and the most bleedy part of your head (your face) is still exposed.
Gloves may protect you from getting cut and bleeding like a stuck pig, but they don't do anything for the impact like so many people think. That being said, I don't think you will find many people who would suggest replacing gloves with helmets, but rather use them in conjunction.

Thanks,

get some good head gear. i dont get why people dont like protective gear. for instance, at my bjj school, i am the only person who wears ear guards and one of the only people who wears a mouth guard. they were required at my old school so i just got used to them but everyone just says there uncomfortable.

Well in BJJ A LOT of guys want cauliflower ear to look bad ass. However after they get it they usually say it sucks!! They still don't drain it often though, but when I ask people (the guys who don't wear any) about protective gear there response is usually , "I don't really care." I'm still trying to get used to wearing my mouth guard and I just got a cup. Being lifted in the air by your crotch doesn't feel too good. lol

Mouth guards are definitely needed in grappling! Sometimes the opponents arm may hit your teeth. That's dangerous.
So anyway, does headgear really protect you ? I guess the nose still hurts like hell and gets broken even with headgear. How do you gets used to getting pounded in the head?

Or they try to do a front choke but the blades of their wrist is across your mouth instead of your neck. Top part of mouth go left, bottom go right. You go, ouhuhuoghggh.

Quality head gear doesn't protect you from feeling the shot. You feel the impact. It just isn't as severe as it could be, keeping concussion injuries to a minimum. It also helps reduce scalp cuts. You can train hard core and still train smart. Wearing head gear and some sort of gloves is training smart. I also highly reccomend mouth protection and a cup. If you are clashing shins with someone who has trained shins, then shin protectors are good. The thing is, if you are injured you can't train..or work. That retards your learning. So be smart when training. It doesn't mean you are a pussy if you wear head gear. It means you are using what is inside that skull.
I like to drink before I train. The alcohol numbs all the pain!! It's great to do before you throw down in your back yard for reeeaaal! (sorry guys, I will be referencing that video in the other thread for a while lol)

lol honestly, head gear is not only uncomfortable, but also usually either restricts my peripheral vision or my hearing - either of which drive me completely insane
