That is exactly the point. The Master in that scene was completely unable to defend himself against a random martial artist. It shows that, at the very least, chi is not something you can rely on in a fight.
He allegedly lost $5,000 and/or the rights to his school when he went down in that match. So I don't think that it can be explained away by "he didn't want to seriously hurt his opponent."

Well, I certainly wonder what they say in those books. You have links of them or you'll send by e-mail? Just let me know and I'll send my e-mail address to you.

So has anyone actually seen a demonstration of chi first hand or at the least had someone who they truelly trusted see chi first hand? I've had two experiences but both could be explained away.
1. Went to a Wing Chun class were the instructor (a self professed custodian of Wing Chun) said he used his chi to power his one inch punch. There were two visitors there, me and another fellow (recently retired from the US navy). The other guy really bought into the idea and when he was punched, he flew six feet backwards through the air and was stopped by the classes seniors (using punching bags) and was winded. When I was struck, I moved back one step and was otherwise disappointed. Simply a case of self-fulfilling prophecy.
2. One of my fellow Silat students was going on about how his brother used chi to make his opponants flee. Having sparred with his brother (6'6" and 350lbs) I believe maybe it was more to do with pyschological posturing and the fact that the guy is really intimidating.

yeah, if you don't believe it I guess you won't be affected it's like an defense system that you do to your self.
And if it is a psychological posturing I guess it's better then if that guy flew 6 feet so...
Over nearly 20 years in Chinese martial arts I've heard all kinds of explanations. Here is the one I accept the most... chi is the electromagnetic energy in the body and as Joe said, all living being have this. Some people can manipulate this energy to some extent. However, it is pure fantasy that people can use this energy to blast people with chi balls or no touch knock outs.
As far as getting chi or getting in touch with it, I wouldn't worry about it unless you would like to start studying the Chinese internal arts or homeopathic medicine. Concentrate more on good living and correct martial training and that will benefit you more than chasing chi.
I belive in chi only to the extent of it bieng electro magnetic energy that can be used to increase someones feeling of power and or concentration and relaxation. as for chasing after chi, i would not recommend dabbling to far in it.
I do a bit chi practices along with dynamic tension to focus my energy for a better workout but do not look at it spiritually in any way.
I would not, however, recommend chi practices for everyone in the martial arts. some Chinese martial arts focus on chi alot from what i understand.
