Introduction to Lu Nan Ba Ji Quan (Southern Lu Province Ba Ji Fists)

Lu Nan Ba Ji Fists is also known as Shao Lin Ba Ji Fists. Its main spreading grounds are southern part of Shan Dong and northern part of Jiang Su provinces. It was passed down by Yang Xiu Shan (1869-1947), who was a resident from Zao Zhuang town, Shan Dong province.

Yang Xiu Shan’s Shao Lin fists and Ba Ji fists’ lineages are unknown. It was said that he once worked as a marital art escort before in Bei Ping (today known as Bei Jing). He later escaped to Zi Fang village, Shan Dong province after he had killed someone in Bei Ping. He lived in Zi Fang village by becoming as a martial art instructor. From that time onwards, Lu Nan Ba Ji Fists then started to spread in Zi Fang village.

For this martial art sect, its contents are: the Ten Elongations Forms, Ten Shao Lin Fists, Two Gates Fists, Four Gates Fists, Spears, 2-Sections Stick, 9-Sections whip, Broad Swords, Poles, and Unarm Combat etc. All its unarm and weapons’ tao lu (kata) could be either separated into single or dual practices.

The term, gates (doors) meant directions. Two Gates Fists was named two gates because it hit at front and back directions. Four Gates Fists was named four gates because it hit at front, back, left and right directions.

Traditionally, one has to start from the Ten Shao Lin Fists first. He has to build up his stamina first before he could learn the Lu Nan Ba Ji fists. During the Ten Shao Lin Fists forms learning process, one will start from the second form instead of the first form. This is because the second form is easier to learn than the first form.

Today, one can by pass the Ten Shao Lin Fists and start learning the Lu Nan Ba Ji Fists directly. But the requirement for the Ten Elongations Forms practice is still emphasized. The Ten Elongations Forms is actually a form of stretching exercises which will helps to keep our bodies fit and healthy.
