Not even close. The positions are vastly different. Strategy is vastly different. Amount of people involved are vastly different. And I dont know of any 350 pound rugby players. The collisions look a lot less explosive to me.
In Rugby, every position MUST be able to run for the endzone. Every position MUST when that ball crosses the plane, be able to kick their own field goal.
They do it without padding so instead of bouncing off each other in a collision, they collide. Flesh and bone collide. No helmets, no face guards, no thigh pads, no shoulder pads. Far more brutal.
I like soccer better though. Without Soccer, there would be no American Football. Don't believe me, check the history.
Thats not exactly a rebuttal. That just emphasizes what I said. The positions are vastly different in the two sports. And like I said I dont see guys running into each other at full speed, but I am not much of an observer so I am sure I am missing the most hard nosed guys that play. Also there arent any 350 pounders, I assure you they dont have to move very fast for them to hurt you even with pads on.
Just checked out some action on you tube. While I must say its very impressive to see these guys throw their bodies at each other with reckless abandon, I was way off base on that one. However, I cant help but notice the astronomical number of cheap shots. Leaving yourself that open as a part of the sport is just stupid to me. Also everyone looks to be about the same size 180-200 pounds. Thats little in the world of football. I personally wouldnt want 250 pound 4.5 running Brian Urlacher running into me with pads, let alone without pads and helmet. Thats just me. You also gotta remember there are guys like Julius Peppers in the NFL that are faster than 90% of your rugby players and tips the scales at nearly 300 pounds. Its a totally different world, in terms of strategy, size, strength, speed, and ball skills. I'd say rugby is closer to hockey than to football.

Football is the greatest sport ever created. It shows determination for both teams. It's not so easy to score on your opponent. American football people. The hard hits put you on the edge of your seat.
Basketball comes up next. Though boring at times because it seems that it's so easy to score on the opposing team. It's still enjoying at times. Plus, your able to show off your new moves and see if they will work. Freestyle just like in martial arts can help you get around the opposition.
I like football. What I don't like are the excess rules that various organizations add to football.
I dislike that you have to "register" a play in order to be able to use it. This removes one of the last elements of strategy from the game and makes it an issue of who can throw the furthest, catch the best, and run the fastest.
My favorite is getting out on a field with a bunch of friends and just playing a game. If someone comes up with a brilliant idea for a play, use it.
Basketball's good, too.
I hate professional baseball, although it's ok to play.
