Michael Phelps best swimmer, uh no.

Well if any of you visit CNN then you know they host daily polls. Well todays poll is "Is Michael Phelps the best swimmer ever" or something like that.

My answer is no. First of all the person that invented the swimming techniques was probably a better swimmer because he invented them.

Or how about the guys that swim against waves in the ocean they are much better swimmers. Or how about the rescue swimmers that swim against waves and pull bodies along with them.

Saying Michael Phelps is the best swimmer in the world is like saying the guy that wins the TKD event at the Olympics is the best martial artist in the world. And we all know how dumb that sounds.

"Is Michael Phelps the best swimmer ever" Yes he is the BEST Swimmer ever with no doubt that competes. Just look at what he has done when it comes to the sport of swimming. To say a Lifeguard or a surfer us better that might be true but very unlikely and if they are they need to compete. It is unfair to put a lifeguard or a surfer in the same league as Phelps just look at what he has done for the US and the records/golds so far. The best in the world are at the Olympics and he is making them look like chumps.

As far as TKD the people who compete in the Olympics are the best at TKD in the world. They have the best Olympic point sparring and on the national team that is why they are the best. If you want to compare a TKD to Martial Artist no they are no the best Martial Artist because they do not have MMA in the Olympics they have TKD and JUDO.

I understand your point but there is no good arguement at this time as why Phelps is not the best in the world. Soon to have more GOLD medals then anyone in the history of the olympics. That is just amazing feat at least.

You made my point. He is the best olympic style swimmer just as the TKD kid is the best olympic TKD point sparrer. Hell that same TKD guy more than likely still isnt the best TKD fighter because he is used to scoring points not doing damage (two completely diff worlds).

Just like Phelps probably struggles with swimming against a tide or carrying an almost lifeless body to shore (through the tide again).

They should have been more accurate with their phrasing of the question. This guy cant lay claim to being the best swimmer only the best olympic style swimmer.

I wouldnt say worked up. I'm just saying I thought it was inaccurate. I mean honestly best still doesnt describe it as he is technically the fastest olympic style competition swimmer. There are still people he competes against that have better form on their strokes which would technically make them better swimmers but slower.

Worked up...I'd say that giving the national teams the moniker of best in basketball is ridic. There is no such thing as best in basketball if you dont play atleast a 5 game series although a 7 really seperates the men from the boys. These tournaments are fluff. Even with our crappy teams from 03 to 05 no team in the world could have been us in a series.

You cant make that extrapolation based on the current data. To keep the analogy going you wouldnt say that the best Olympic TKD fighter would be awesome kickboxer. Based on what we know you cant make that leap.

Now I'm sure both would be well above average. I think its safe to say that neither would be among the best because that is not the exact activity they train for.

Case in point there are no walls to kick off of in the ocean.

Or do you remember Michael Johnson. You know the fastest man on dry land for a few years. Would he have been the fastest running on a beach or up a mountain??? Probably not as there are people more suited or more accustomed to these activities.

And lets not even start with distance.

Awesome find John55.

If these guys cant agree then I guess there is no way that we can either. I did find it funny that they brought up MMA though.

But it did seem people were leaning against his being great in the ocean.

I am a surfer, so I spend some time on those boards...mma is brought up quite a bit over there as there was just an article in surfer mag about a pro surfer, Joel Tudor, taking bjj classes in hawaii. I think hes a blue belt.
