It featured some of the prettiest Tae Kwon Do movies by two top TKD practioners in Simon Rhee and Philips Rhee.
They went on to make the series, up to "Best of the Best 4".
I think the first one was probably the best in terms of fighting and story.
If you like TKD, you have to check it out.
i agree w/ the first Best of the Best being the best one, but like most movies that become sequels, prequels and so on, the first one is almost always the best one. i also liked Best of the Best 2. i think it was a good follow up based on the character of the cocky one, i forget his name at the moment.
I think you are refering to "Travis", one played by Chris Penn, brother of actor Sean Penn. BTW, Chris Penn died not too long ago - overdose or something.
Great movie, great moves, great choreography, great actors. The first two movies were great. The last one was very good. If anyone is looking for an action movie that encompasses heartfelt passion and kick butt action, The first Best of the Best is ....well....the best.
If you look at the official movie poster, Eric was the center piece of that movie, not Philip or Simon Rhee. This was back in 1989, so maybe Hollywood wasn't quite ready for an Asian starring movie.
If you watch the old trailer (there are several versions but watch the US version), they downplay Bruce Lee and mention John Saxton as the main character.

It is PG-13 (Source: IMDB.com http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096913/ ). I have only really seen the first one and a few minutes of the second. One possible reason for the Eric Roberts getting top billing is the story follows his character a little more (we get a bit more emotionally attached due to his having a son) and because he had a little more of a career at that time.
2nd one has almost all the same casts from the first one, except for Sally Kirkland and James Earl Jones. 3rd and 4th one only have Phillip Rhee, the one who plays Tommy Lee.

I'm pretty sure that Phillip and Simon are both related to Joon Rhee read that somewhere but cant remeberexactly where. Loved the first one have recently been thinking of picking up the dvd, have it on vhs second one was pretty god too although it kind of went downhill from there.
