Not necessarily. Although it was a org to branch away and form on its own, it tends to follow many of the same foundations and material

I was referring to the founder of ATA.

From my reading he taught the ITF forms thus my thinking he trained from ITF.

I heard he made new forms... I also heard he completely westernized and americanized Traditional TaeKwonDo...(ATA TKD'er are known for wearing colored Doboks(Gi), which would be more like HabKiDo than TaeKwonDo)

he tought ITF to who.

you are right he was ITF.
but ATA now has really no connection to ITF and dont follow ITF. since they stopped using the Chang Hon Patterns and started using the Songham patterns.

I think it was complete martial arts web site that stated he taught his first students in the United States ITF forms until he created his own.

Hey ya'll....
The ATA WAS affiliated with the ITF at one time. If not directly, it was modeled after it. We were all recommended to buy General Choi's TaeKwon-Do handbook during the 1970's. The uniforms, Patterns and such. At one time, it had MANY of the NOW Big Name Masters in it, Hee Il Cho for one.
G.M. H.U.Lee taught the ITF Patterns till the ATA created Song Ahm (maybe mispelled) this is when I left the ATA. They were once known to be one of the TOP TaeKwonDo orgs. in the country.
They still create many good techs., but commercialism does seem to have taken over the Association and quality has diminished greatly.......
The ATA has had many splits since the late 1970s, and they lost some of their best people.
They were NEVER connected with the WTF in any way.
That's my 2 cents worth for free.

Is this so surprising? After all, Taekwondo is TaeKwonDo is Tae Kwon Do. There are a few variations based on who is teaching it, but in the largest part the core techniques are highly similar.

From what I have noticed there are 3 major TaeKwonDo style differences.
1- G.M. Duk Sung Son style - ChungDoKwan WTA (world tkd association)
2- WTF and those similar it
3- ITF and those similar to it
In my opinion, the techniques are taught very different.
WTA teaches many of the blocks coming from the hip
WTF based sets most blocks similar to ITF but most kicks are "snapping" not many "thrusting" kicks
ITF based teaches the thrusting kicks
Again, Just my Opinion

Hey Kevin, how about toning down the boldface?

Thanks

I'm sorry if what I was saying was confusing. I am by no means saying that they are all absolutely identical. Rather, the differences are all very small in comparison to the differences between Tae Kwon Do and, say, Sambo. I would think (though I am not sure) that you would be hard pressed to find a Dan rank in any of the sub-styles of Tae Kwon Do who would not be able to pick up all the additional skills in a different sub-set in less than a few hours.

Ok, I follow you......you have a pretty good point there.
Thanks.
