in my school their is one kid whos a blackbelt and his belt is white with a black stripe through the center, i know what u mean though there is a green belt in my class that i spar with (i am only yellow) and i can beat him but probably not every time. some schools are differant though. i'm not positive in this but i think u rank based on how well you know the art, and if that is true than maybe ur teacher isn't teaching the class very well, otherwise you wouldn't be able to beat the black belts.
my school does have children black belts. there testing is the same as the adult black belt testing.
i agree some kids should not obtain a black belt. however, they have to show power for their size, snap, know their 9 katas without mistakes, know all their kicks and blocks. they are also required to spare 4-6 others at one time without quiting or loosing their temper, and also show power with board breaking.other requirements are one-steps, takedowns, ability to teach techniques correctly and show the utmost respect.
not many of them make it to black belt because we don't just hand them out, they are earned.
martial arts teaches self respect, disaplin, and respect for others.
my two 11 year olds are black belts and i am very proud of them, they earned there belts, give 100% in training and teaching. When they due reach adulthood i feel they will be so much further along with their training then a lot of adults I see.they love it and neither want to quit, just keep learning.
In the "old" days, they did not give out TKD black belts to people under certain age (can't remember the exact age) and the Black/Red belt was meant to be the Junior Blackbelt for that age group.
But I also understand your frustration about belt not being a true measure and I don't think it was really meant to be. I was a "blackbelt" in TKD and when I hate to start another martial arts, I had to start over as a white belt and obviously I was a lot more advanced than some other people who's already been there a while and I paid no attention to the color of the belts but concentrated on the training itself.
The key words- "give out". The learning curve has changed to accomodate the goal. The rank. Therefore, with money paid, and the learning curve achieved, the kids are the customers. Schools have to satisfy the customers.
If you want to discuss black belts for children, start a new thread. This thread is more than a year and a half old.
