Its too bad rank isnt similar system to system. People who know a lot about martial arts know that a white belt in BJJ could have 2-3 years of training and that a white belt in TKD probably just started. The main problem is that most people view martial arts as a whole, so when someone in bjj says they have a blue or purple belt in bjj, people think...wow my kid got their blue in TKD in 6 months or something and now is a brown and so the respect of your art is just lost by that person....now within the MA world, when someone says you have a purple in bjj, you know they have like 5-8 years of experience and can more than hold their own on the mat and that any beginner will not really have a chance with them. I am not really saying that either way is right, but there should be consistency in the MA world as a whole because the perception to the outside world should be taken seriously...especially as kids who brag about their black belt are getting beat up in schools. No kid in BJJ could ever say they have a black belt.
This whole belt system is one of the main reasons that MAs like BJJ rip on arts like TKD.

There was a joke a while back that Ninjitsu practitioners would have to earn their 9th Dan by fighting an uzi-wielding rhinoceros while encased in Jello. Do you think that by beating you a 13 year old kid will be better prepared to fight that gun-rhino-Jello thing?
Although, I do like the idea of a kid having to hold their own against a normal adult to get a black belt. If only I had adult students and/or a kid who was that good.

cant say i blame you. but getting back to why kids have black belts. the supposed reasoning is:
A Child having a black belt signifies their knowledge of the martial arts and their dedication to training it does not however mean that they have the power or the physical abilities equivalent to that of the average black belt

The subject of kids having black belts is wrong in my opinion a black belt should not be awarded so easily. But times have changed and schools are no where near as hard as they use to be.

hey, the karate kid earned his black belt in two weeks and still beat a guy who had been training for several years so why can't kids have black belts.

What would really make this thread interesting is if a member who was a kid and had a blackbelt posted their opinion. Or maybe an intsructor who had awarded a kid a black belt.
