I will be testing for 2nd brown belt rank on 04/07/2008. I know my forms and one-steps. I have had problems breaking in the past. I'm doing a reverse ax kick for one technique and a palm heel strike for the other. I have to keep in mind to relax before I strike. I will keep you posted on how I do.
I wish you well. Train hard, stay focused. Remember to strike through the board, not at it.

All the brown belts had problems with breaking during the testing. I broke the boards with a reverse ax kick, but had problems with the palm heel strike. The instructors will be giving us a second chance next Monday on the board breaking (they even said the boards were tough--needed to dry out more). We did pass everything else. I will keep your comments in mind while training for the breaks.

That reverse ax kick is a difficult technique. Impressive. Don't let the palm heel problem get to you. Just keep focused on striking through. I failed my first attempt at 2nd Dan because of breaking, so I know it can be discouraging.

I don't know where they were getting wood that was still wet, but if you were doing the kick correctly then it is usually one of two other factors. The big one I see is when there is a knot right in the middle of the board. The board generally does not want to split right down the middle of a knot. The second deals with how the board is held. If it is allowed to 'give' it robs power from your strike (which is why speed breaks are tough). Keep trying, you'll get it.
