I think some TKD schools have similar rituals but a lot more open with their high level testing. In fact, few years ago, a TKD grandmaster in our area was testing for his 7th or 8th blackbelt and invited his teacher from Korea to US and the testing was done in a huge public sports arena. A lot of people attended it and was even on the local news paper. I kind of wish I was there, out of curiosity to see what a 7th or 8th level blackbelt testing is like.
I think the "closed door" testing is to secure the proper environment and not allow lower ranks to get the wrong impression

Wrong impression about what? Letting younger belts see a Dan test has (at my school) only served to inspire those younger belts. (Some of my students were very impressed with my 2nd Dan Test when I broke a board with a Jump Spinning Back Kick.)

Wrong impression about how easy it may seem. Or that they may attempt whatever is contained in the test prematurely.

But, I understand, that it is differrent in some schools, per yours for example.
