ATA Fall Nationals

Just wanted to share that I went down to an annual tourney that my organization has at the Wide World of Sports arena at Disney in Orlando. My division is from the ages of 30-39. I was the 2nd youngest out of 7 people in my ring.

I ended up getting 1st place in traditional forms, and 2nd place in point sparring.

When I go to these tourneys, I look forward to the sparring. I honestly never worry about the forms. So it was a big surprise for me. My wife about cried because she was in the stands and thought that I had gotten 3rd...but when I met up with her, she found out I got first...she was just proud of me.

In sparring...I won my first round 5-3. The 2nd round, the score was 1-0 (in favor of me), but the guy ended up gracefully bowing out of the match because he pulled his hamstring. Therefore, my next match was for 1st and 2nd place. I was winning 2-0, but the guy was shorter than me and started getting inside and using his hands. I lost 5-3. Found out after our match that he used to be a boxer! It was a good, fun match!

Thanks everyone!! Win or lose, I always have a great time at tourneys. It was cool because 3-4 of the people in my ring were the same competitors from the tourney that I did in Arkansas. So it was cool to run into familiar faces from different parts of the U.S. within our organization.

Sorry, Chad, no Mikey this time. My son was sad for it too. My wife had to work from home this weekend as well, so after I was done, we packed up and headed back home.

Good job bloodstrike. The way your opponent beat you is how I usually win against TKD stylists also. It is pretty well known that if you have to fight a TKD stylist, they don't use their hands much. Now, this is not ALWAYS true, but generally speaking, it is.

Sparring 101 says to fight a kicker (MOST TKD stylists) like you're in a phone booth, and a puncher like you're on a football field.

So...What did you learn at that tourny?

I understand what you mean. And for the most part, my particular school does not fall into that category. My instructors will call you out in class if he sees you sparring with your hands down. We also practice hand combos. Also, since I cross train, I am not a traditional style TKD sparrer. One of my points was actually by using a Muay Thai front push kick.

The guy was a little shorter than me. What he was doing was coming in after I threw a kick and started using his hands. I started playing into his game, and started to use my hands...he was just faster than me. If I would have stayed with my strategy of being a counter fighter and waiting for him to make a move and throw a side kick or front kick to keep him out and at bay and use my height as my advantage, I might have won...because that is what I was doing for my first 2 points. But, I thought I could box with him...he was just slightly faster. We were actually tied 3-3...he won because since he was using his hands, he threw me off by throwing a crescent kick to my head while I was coming in for more punching action LOL. After watching his previous matches, I didn't expect that from him.

**** And I learned that my hip doesn't like me much at all lately. Damn thing was killing me after I did my form. Never hurt this bad before...I had to take 4 Advil afterwards and when I got home, I iced it down and put some Icy Hot on it.

Thanks, Soul! Tonight I'll get to see how some of the other students from my school did. I felt bad because I couldn't stay and watch them even though some of them watched me. I competed at 9:30am. Everyone else wasn't competing until 1:30 or 3:30pm.

Kinda extraneous, but I wasn't aware that push kicks weren't part of TKD curriculum. It's incorporated into the basics of my style of TSD. There's a difference in the styles for the naysayers, I suppose.
